My Friend Little Chia

I am sure you have seen the commercials around Christmas time. Ch Ch Chiaaa, you can get you favorite animal, president, famous person head and grow Chia on it. I am not sure why, but it really tickled me to think of my least favorite president growing Chia on his head. I thought, gee it would make this guy useful for something. So, I request this President's head Chia for Christmas last year. It sat on my counter for months and months, and did nothing...at all. Just as I had suspected, this guy was not even good to grow Chia on. I booted him outside to the deck and forgot about him. During the summer I set my fern on the deck so it can get some good sunlight. Well, about July, I started noticing some strange plant growing next to my fern. I did not really think to much about and left it, since the fern had had a recent battle for it's life and was not looking real good anyway. At least something was green and growing! This little green plant just started going crazy and growing and growing. My husband says, you know I think it is a Chia, I laughed at him with, a no way. We ended up looking it up and yes it was. A Chia seed from the Chia head had drifted into my Fern pot, liked it there, and took over. I hated to tell hubby he was right, but he was. So the President was indeed good for nothing, but I did get some Chia. I did make some Chia tea with the leaves this weekend. The Photo is the Chia plant, it is over 5 feet tall. Have a beautiful week!

That is wonderful you can get a lot from one. Most of us don't have the space to have a bunch.

The Chia is so healthy and good for you. If you buy it off the shelf it is very expensive.

Wow! 5' is a huge plant. I thought they were only small head shaped plants that grew when you watered it. It doesn't surprise me that the president you least like still couldn't do anything with a chia.

I just found that too funny, telling the kids, see he can't even grow Chia on his head. I have been very shocked by this, I hope to get seeds off it soon.

It is edible, we sprinkle it on our food, for the health benefits. We also use the leaves for tea for the same reason. It does not change the taste of the food and that is a good thing. I am going to find out if I can grow it inside, I intend on repoting it and bringing it in. One problem is that I do not get much sunlight in the winter in the house, so I need to figure out a way to work about that.

yes, at the very top you can see it has a pod. I should get seeds unless the cold weather does it in. I am planning on repotting it and bring it in for the winter.

Oh no, I did not want to open that can of worms. He still sits on my deck and I go out and talk to him from time to time. I do enjoy it when we have a little frost and he has an iced up nose.
