Half a sandwich zip lock baggie & got $40 bucks

United States
January 11, 2017 7:04pm CST
We had a lot of coins in the car and cluttered around so we decided to cash them in! I'm surprised half a zip lock bag turned into 40 bucks! Would have been more if we opt for giftcard as they don't take a fee but next time! I'm not entirely too sure how the giftcard feature works on the Coinstar yet, do you? I also like the breakdown. I'm not entirely too sure how we had half dollars in the bunch too. How do you get rid of coins? Coins way down my purse, so I don't carry coins much. I'd always dump them out every few days in the bucket.

Wow! That's a lot of coins in the car! I keep a small makeup pouch in the car with quarters for parking at a certain doctor's office. My husband loads up jars and containers with coins and we give them to our grandkids. Here in Florida, we will wrap them and deposit them in the bank. My husband is a living coin maker it seems. Lol!

They're coins accumulated :) I don't like carrying too many coins in my bag because it'll weigh the bag down! But I do have a little coin pouch that I keep and every week, I dump the coins in the bucket that counts coins for me. :) That's nice you give the change to your grandkids!! My mom likes to wrap the coins up, I don't have the patience.

In the past I would keep the coins in the jars. But I don't do it any more since the jars are full already I don't like keeping coins in my wallet since they are easy to get lost. So whenever I receive the coins, I will try to spend them as soon as possible

@infatuatedbby I think here people don't like to use the coins, too. Usually people use them to buy the subway ticket from the automatical ticket machine. Or they will spend them in the market.

I save all my loose change and put it in a big, giant jar. It usually takes me the whole year to fill the jar, but once it's full I'll take it down to my credit union and dump it in the CoinStar machine. I usually will get several hundred dollars out of it, and then I deposit the money into my savings account

@infatuatedbby I'm glad my credit union finally got a CoinStar machine, because prior to that I had to count and roll all of the change by hand. That was never fun!

I do not like the coinstar machine due to the fee. I try to use coins as often as possible so I don't get too many of them. I don't often deal with cash, I use debit for most transactions, so I don't end up having much change. A lot of banks and credit unions have coin counters and often do not charge a fee if you have an account with them and plan to deposit the coins into your account (which you can then withdraw).

@katsmeow1213 Yeah it is quite pricey, I bet! But in the long run the machine will make profit :)

I don't like the machine as there is a fee too and I don't have patience to roll the coins like my parents'. I prefer using credit card too so I can get cash back but for some reason, cash comes up somehow and we get all these coins! I have a credit union but they don't have a coin machine. My boyfriends previous bank did and it was nice they don't charge. :)

I use a debit card. I can honestly say I don't remember the last time I saw paper money. Coins occasionally when my daughter is wanted something and it is that end time of the month when we don''t have much money. She will come asking if I have any. Why I don't know cause she usually buys things for me with my card.

I prefer to use my credit card to get cash back and points - it surely adds up. I don't often use money but it seems like I do since we have so many coins. I don't often go to the bank to get cash.. I got cash for Christmas so I think that's why we've been using cash lately.

I have decorative coin jars, one for pennies, one for nickels and dimes and one for quarters. I am a bit anal about separating my coins lol. My bank counts them for free. They love seeing me come in with my coins because they know someone is getting a candy bar. All the tellers guess how much I have and whoever gets closest gets the candy bar I bring with. It's fun lol.

Isn't that nice, it's like found money! I usually do that too, save up change and then go redeem it at Coinstar every so often. I haven't yet used the gift card option. Lately I've been raiding my change quite often, so I haven't been saving it, but I'll be doing that again soon.

Gift cards are great! I was broke in December after doing my holiday shopping, but still had some Macy's gift cards from previous Christmas gifts, so I bought myself some nice perfume. If they'd given me cash instead, it would have been long gone.

40 bucks worth of coins - what a find! I haven't used Coinstar in a long time . . . back then I think I just took the receipt from it and redeemed it at the cashier (grocery store) - a giftcard would be cool! I tend to use up coins when I go out with the kids . . . for parking meters, vending machines (if we need to), overdue books at the library, duck feed dispensers . . . I can always use up the coins somehow .

I keep toonies (two dollar coins) and loonies (one dollar coins) in the car for carwashes. And that collection has saved me a few times when I forgot my wallet! And some quarters for parking. Other than that I use the coins as much as possible rather than collect them.
