Who would fake having Cancer to make money?

Canada
January 19, 2017 9:59am CST
I remember hearing and reading about this a few years ago when it happened and then nothing.... I'm guessing because her trial must have been recently in court. Its in the papers today. I hope karma comes down on her big time. She pretended to have cancer and sucked thousands of dollars into her bank account and out of charities that do so much to help real cancer patients. Some believe she was forced to do it but we all know. a phone call to the police would have stopped it. If that was the truth... Its costly to break the law. She will have to pay back the money she stole and spend two years in jail. I hope she spends every day of those two years in jail with no pardon and think about what a evil thing she did. Just the thought of stealing from Charities makes me angry. You can read the whole story from the link below.
A Hamilton woman who defrauded the province of more than $200,000 in a cancer-faking scheme has been sentenced to two years behind bars.

This is something I would never do, I would feel like I would really get cancer to punish me of such a terrible thing. After all this is what she deserves.

That's exactly what I thought too, if you keep on pretending then you'll get it. Law of attraction, I suppose. I'd rather beg on the street then.

@sabtraversa I am pretty superstitious about this kind of things, if I were that woman I would feel very scared now.

There was a poster on another forum that I belong to with a similar story just a month or two ago. The poster has a young child with medical issues, and her mother-in-law went to her church with the sob story about how poorly her grandchild was doing and how the family needed help. The church took a collection for the parents of the child, and numerous parishioners gave the mother-in-law gifts and cards with financial gifts in them to give to the parents. The mother-in-law pocketed every cent, and the parents only found out over a year later when another of her children forwarded them an email she'd received that was basically a 'pity my situation' newsletter to church friends. I firmly believe there's a special circle of hell reserved for people who defraud charities in that manner... and I say that as someone who doesn't really subscribe to the entire concept of hell.

@PainsOnSlate Yeah, it was really shocking how much time and effort she'd spent creating that fake reality for the people she knew. If it's any consolation, she's facing the consequences of her actions now. The church removed her from their board, and I believe the poster said that she's being shunned by most of the parishioners she defrauded. She's definitely reaping what she's sown, but a lot of her rage is directed at her son and his wife because they exposed her charade for the fraud it was. Really, there's nobody to blame but herself for what's happened.

Your story gave me goose bumps, and I agree, there better be a special place in hell for people who can do that and as far as I care the rest of their lives should hell here too...

I think that there are quite a few people out there who have done the same thing. I just don't understand it. I don't understand how some people could just do something like this and deceive people.

@PainsOnSlate I'm glad she was caught too, before she managed to get more money from people.

That is low. But she isn't the first. Years ago the ceos of one of the major charities were caught using donations to fund their ridiculously high salaries. It was in the news for a while then suddenly the media backed off and not another word was heard about it. The stupid media only reports on things if no one pays them to shut up. Sometimes I wonder why we haven't amended the 1st amendment to restrict the press from reporting lies. I really believe a lot of them should be slapped with slander charges.

Yep, I would @PainsOnSlate but greed runs deep and a lot of those in charge of the Charities are in it for the money not the cause.

You would think if it is their charity, they would want to help those who need it instead of raising their own pay check.

Yes what if she really got cancer after lying and stealing money. All she thinks is having money and will do everything to get it.

I know if I was faking I would be afraid Karma would make sure I got it for real. I have no idea what was going on in her mind but she did a good job pretending so it had to be the money...

@averygirl72 what a fool she was/ is...sitting in jail.

That's the most bizarre thing I've ever heard of before. Although the lawyer doesn't think she came up with this alone, it sounds like she didn't try to implicate anyone else, so we don't really know. It also says she initially put paperwork in as early as 2008 before asking for help later on. I hope this is a lone case and not normal.

Certainly not normal but I have heard of similar things happening before both here and in the US.

This is certainly a dreadful crime. The money she wrangled out of others is that much that people with real needs went without.

I don't understand how somebody could do something so terrible. They must not care about others. Whatever the reason she said she did it was no excuse. This makes me angry and sick.

@PainsOnSlate this is such an evil thing to do. Apparently, it is quite common to scam charities. I am glad she got put in jail for this but, I don't think that 2 years is long enough.
