TO LICK or NOT TO LICK....

United States
February 9, 2017 1:41am CST
This morning, I went to go run some errands. A store in particular that I was excited to visit was Dollar Tree because it's been quite some time! I don't often visit Dollar Tree unless I need balloons, candles, greeting cards, or party table cloths. I was excited to see if they had any neat engagement or wedding type of decorations for my small upcoming party next month. They had some but, I didn't like them, so I will order the rest of my decorations on Amazon or purchase at Michael's Arts & Crafts. Back to the topic: TO LICK or NOT TO LICK Another reason, I had to stop by Dollar Tree was to buy envelopes! They're extremely cheap. OPTION 1 - 40 Envelopes for a BUCK but you have to LICK the envelope -OR- OPTION 2 - 30 ENVELOPES for a BUCK and you don't have to LICK the envelope? I went with OPTION 2, 10 envelopes less but I don't have to lick the icky envelope and it's much convenient to seal without having to worry if your tongue did the job properly (or if you apply water). Do you lick or do you not lick? (By the way we are talking about envelopes) (Photo belongs to me)

It's been awhile since I've needed to use envelopes. I prefer to lick, but maybe that's just because it's what I've always done. Those self adhesive ones are pretty cool too though. I got my wedding invites from Michael's I believe. I am sure you could even choose a site that would design them.

I don't like the after taste of the envelopes. No wedding invites yet, wedding will maybe be next year! Just an engagement party for now so it's an invite verbally

@infatuatedbby I suggest a long engagement. I know you've been with your bf for awhile already, but long engagements are good. I think that is the only thing I would have changed about the whole relationship, even as there were other things I wasn't very happy with. I think a long engagement would have saved a lot of heartache. Anyway, I know everyone's relations are different.

@scribbledadnauseum I haven't had to use envelopes in quite a long time either. I do everything electronically now, so it is very rare that I have to physically mail anything.

Well I haven't sent anything in the mail for a long time.. but I would go the same with 30 for a buck so you don't have to have awful taste in your month from the sticky part.

Yes! Especially since there is bill pay feature. These envelopes will literally last a year or two! But my boyfriend uses them to pay rent to the homeowner.

@infatuatedbby that would be me as well I would have then forever but yeah they do make a good way to pay stuff like rent of you hand right to the landlord.

@hillhjill Yes, it's more secure because he's mailing a check and even with the licking / or water method - I always apply a little tape just encase the envelope gets snagged on something or the seal isn't secure.

I always buy envelopes that do not need to be licked. I cut my tongue many years ago licking an envelope and it has been very painful, I do not want to repeat the experience.

I like to lick - but I also make sure to buy the kind of envelopes that you can't see thru - some of those cheap ones are 'security type'

I seem to remember one of those articles that tell you what not to buy at those dollar stores . . . and I seem to recall that there was something (some chemical) on those lick envelopes that you shouldn't lick (toxic!). It's rare that I have to seal any envelopes at all . . . but we do have a box of those self-seal ones. With greeting cards, I just run my finger under some water and apply. Ever almost get a paper cut on your tongue?

@infatuatedbby I do that too! I just got balloons and a card this morning for my daughter - bday today! And a tablecloth too. I haven't bought envelopes in so long . . . we still have tons left from literally a couple years ago! Yah, those paper cuts are why I don't lick 'em anymore.

I don't go to dollar tree often and when I do ~ I would go for greeting cards (the back of the cards all value like $3-4 even $5-6 bucks!), plastic table clothes, candles and envelopes! Oh and match box cars for my nephew now. And most importantly, balloons :) Oh yes I have gotten a paper cut on my tongue no fun!

I would go with the cheaper " lick envelopes" but would cut a small piece of wet sponge, rug or small water color brush instead of using mah

Then I will have additional clutter of a wet sponge, or small water brush near the envelopes? @louievill :)

@infatuatedbby those things are easy to dispose off once you are done, the sponge would just be the size of an eraser.

I do not like the after taste of the envelopes. I would use water or tape even sometimes. Even going with the 30 count versus 40 count, it'll last us 1-2 years since we don't mail a lot of stuff.

That's great! Here we still see both on the shelves, the old school ones where you lick or self-seal.

Yes! Dollar tree sells envelopes 30 count for the self adhesive large envelopes. You get more if you buy the smaller size :)

I will have a different choice than you. I don't mind lick the envelopes since it will not spend me a long time and it is not very inconvenient for me. I will be glad that I can spend the same money but have extra 10 envelopes

I don't like the taste. I don't like dabbing water and making a mess. It is much secure and convenient for the self adhesive. But my mother would not agree, she would rather have the extra ten envelopes
