Do You Read the Comments of a Discussion Before Posting your Own?

March 14, 2017 9:46am CST
I don't. I'm not sure at first why my approach is like this until I found out that if I read the comments down before I post my comment its so similar with absolutely every one else that I'm stumped what else to comment. I find it hard to say something else when I'm already set what to say. And I end up just liking the article because I don't want to butt in to a conversation with the same comment that is running through my head.

Yes. Better that way. Atleast I won't run out of things to say later on.

@diosabella What others say will not affect my comment, so it reading them first seems superfluous.

@Asylum I got excited one time and read on the comment before I post mine and that is what happened.

It is not always that I do not read. Sometimes I do specially when the post is too long

I read the discussion and then post my comment. Today I had trouble understanding a long post, so I had to take a look at the comments. They were all different to such an extreme, that I don't think too many understood the discussion either. Whatever! Lol!

I see what you mean. When i get to the point that I don't understand it myself I just pass it. I don't want to comment on something I'm not too sure of myself either and when I see a lot of comments with different views it will give me a huge headache not ideas what is it all about.

@diosabella why should I compare my comments to other's? I think I have my own perception of the discussion so I don't need to make a rough draft.

Its a better idea to write it down and make comparison later with others when its needed.

@diosabella Only sometimes. If I seem a little bit lost or confused with what the author is talking about then yes I will have a quick read through other comments hoping to get a better understanding. Otherwise I just answer straight away.

I get you. There were times I don't get it either. The title and the content were not connected at all or misleading. When I encountered this I don't comment on anything at all.

@diosabella Yes but it's still nice to leave your first instinct for the comment.
14 Mar 17
Yes. It would depend on how interesting the article is. Sometimes its hard to read when your simply not interested how much more to comment on it.

Strictly speaking, the old guidelines (or the old ways, supposedly, as I remember it) say that one should read all responses first before responding yourself. And that you must only respond when you have something new to add to the discussion... But I found that quite... discouraging. First, if I am supposed to read everything first before joining in a discussion, then I would probably not be able to join any discussion at all. Imagine finding an interesting discussion which already has 50 or more (lengthy) responses... when will you be able to read through all that to be able to respond yourself? I would probably take days... (I am a slow reader). Second, if I have to respond only if I have something new to add then what would happen if, on the 3rd day of reading those responses, I find one response that's pretty much my answer... am I only supposed to say "I agree"? Or perhaps, not respond at all anymore? That's just depressing. In fact, the above is partly the reason why I sometimes prefer to just look at the Discussions w/ No Response. There wouldn't be any such problems there. Anyway, I suppose (or I hope) that they are less stricter now. What I just do now is either respond even without reading the other responses, or just try to scroll through and read a few of them quickly (especially if they are short responses). I would hope that is acceptable behavior. I am no superwoman after all.

@diosabella "I know that we are different people but sometimes our way of thinking are the same." Very true! Great minds think alike. So I would hope it should be ok if I respond even when someone else has alreadt given a response similar to mine. "And I actually don't like reading some of the post because its way out of the topic most of the times. How can I insert myself in a discussion without being rude?" I know what you mean. There are lots of instances when threads in the comment section has moved on to other things outside of the topic. It would be a bit awkward joining that... And about the discussion without responses... Yes, most times, I suppose, there aren't many good topics there, but who knows, you might see some gems there sometimes.

OMG! I'm so happy that its not the case anymore. I mean it will make the discussion very limited. And I think I won't last here for days. I really hate when I'm out of things to add or say? I know that we are different people but sometimes our way of thinking are the same. Not our fault that our opinion may have likeness with someone else. And I actually don't like reading some of the post because its way out of the topic most of the times. How can I insert myself in a discussion without being rude? I just do it seldom with people I already know here. I tried checking on discussion with no comments yet like you did. But the problem was most of it was hardly a discussion. There are some who just posted a question which has been answered so many times. Or a discussion with only 2 sentences and I can't relate to it too. Its very rare for me to be the first to comment on something that is really good or that I really like. I'm really happy that they are not as strict before

@moirai Its okay to reply the same thing just not word for word. I think they are more lax about that rule now because almost every one does it. Some's I do get some good topics. But as it is a gem its very rare.

I read other comments before posting my own. Is that the wrong way? I did find some difficulty when someone already wrote what I had in mind.

There is no right or wrong. I just do this because I will have difficulty later on on how to rephrase or use another word to suit what about I am to say when someone else already say it. I end up not commenting when nothing comes up.

@delhshop I mean your own network of followers and friends. If you don't read some of the comments how would you know if you would like them too? Not all can read and post a comment in your discussion. But you can if you find the person interesting.

If a discussion appeals me, I do not read what others have written, while writing my own response. I find that some of the discussions are beyond my comprehension, then only I check the responses written by others to understand the crux of the discussion.

I just reply and if I have time or the subject is very interesting then I read to see what thoughts others have. There are so many posts and comments that I can only do what I do. I have a hard time keeping up.

Sometimes, it depends. If there is some sort of question to answer (like 'do you know what plant this is?' for example) and it's something I know the answer to, I often check whether 30 other people have already answered it! Otherwise I tend to just ramble on in my own way.

Comment anyway. It helps you with your bank, and it's nice to read that so many people feel the same way, especially when someone is going through a rough time. Typically I don't read the other comments before I comment. I will occasionally read them after I comment.
