3 days of no heat!!

United States

We are being hit with a really bad snow storm. Most areas have a travel ban because the roads are so bad. A lot of places closed yesterday, and some areas remain closed today. When I got home from work yesterday, we noticed that the furnace wasn't working. It had been working in the morning, but stopped sometime in the afternoon. Hubby tried to get it going again, but couldn't. He called a company to come look at it, but due to driving conditions, they wouldn't come out yesterday. We went all night with no heat. Hubby took the day off work so they could come out today and look at the furnace. It needs a new gas valve. That is not a part they have on hand, it has to be ordered. It should be here by tomorrow. So I get to take tomorrow off and wait around for them to come fix the heat. Meanwhile we'll spend another night with no heat. It's 20 degrees outside, and windy. We're freezing! We have space heaters.. one in each bedroom. It helps. If we keep the bedroom doors closed it's not too bad.. But the rest of the house is like an ice box.. I seriously hope there are no other issues with getting the furnace fixed tomorrow!

That's pretty bad. That sounds like two pairs of sweatpants sleeping weather.

Yep.. I am wearing 2 pair of pants, and 2 shirts, and my robe. It's not too bad in my bedroom. I actually don't normally get heat in there anyway, so I always just have the space heater going, and it's a small room so that works well enough.

I asked someone on here a day or two ago what happens if the heat goes off. Maybe it was you! I can imagine you are really pleased to at least have space heaters. Hope the furnace gets fixed soon.

It decided to come back on sometime during the night, so we woke up to a warm house! We still have to get it fixed though so this doesn't happen again.

I would have preferred to have it fixed the first day it went out.. but yeah, 2 days is better than 2 weeks!

What a terrible time for the furnace to need repair in the middle of a blizzard . Our neighbors posted on Facebook they have had frozen pipes and no water since the storm hit. I told them to come over and get water to drink since we have a well but they haven't. I hope you got the furnace fixed now!

@katsmeow1213 I had a hot water pipe burst once in my cellar. I could only think how much oil was wasted heating all that water lol

@shaggin I've had my basement flooded by rain water, but I've never had a pipe burst. We use PVC pipes so hubby can fix the plumbing himself if there ever are any problems.

Yes it's been working since Thursday morning.. Our pipes froze a couple weeks ago, but thankfully only for a few hours.

I'm so sorry to hear that! What a rotten time for the furnace to break down. I'm glad you do have those space heaters, and hope the furnace is repaired soon. Here is a hug to keep you warm!

The heat decided to come back on sometime in the middle of the night, so luckily we woke up to a warm house! We still got the part fixed though.

Nowhere to go, even if there were somewhere to go, the roads are awful and nobody should be driving. Space heaters helped a lot.

I see the terrible snow storm from TV and here everyday. The snow is so heavy. I am sorry to hear that you don't have the heat and it is so suffering. I hope everything will be fixed well and you can get back your heat in such a bad weather.

I had wondered if everything was closed today like they said it might be yesterday - I had been wondering too about your pipes but oh no it was the heat! I imagine you guys are layered up right now - all bundled up! Well I hope you get that furnace fixed up a-ok tomorrow! Wish we could give you our heat . . . it feels like summer now!

Most things did not close yesterday. Work closed early, only because we were short staffed. We have 2 guys that live about an hour north, and the county they live in still had a travel ban, so the boss told them not to come in. Then 1 other kid called in, although he lives around the corner. So we closed at 3 instead of 4:30.

@katsmeow1213 So much to consider during snowy weather - including people's commutes to work!

I remember times like that when i lived in NY. Don't forget to leave your water faucets dripping so the pipes don't freeze. Good luck.

My pipes did not freeze although we had no heat. They did freeze about a week ago though when the temps were in the single digits!

Yes, I wore 2 pair of pants and 2 sweaters, and sat on the sofa under a blanket with 2 space heaters in the room!
