Usually, well it used to be, men mowed the lawns and tended to all the yard work but that is not happening anymore. 25 years ago "I" opened up my own lawn care service and even hired other women to help me when I got swamped with work. Back then minimum wage was low, around $4.50 to $5 an hour, I could push mow most lawns within an hour. BUT that is where using your head counts, I NEVER worked by the hour, I worked by the job. Meaning I mowed your lawn weekly, or bi weekly for $25 and up. I was making $25 or more per hour. $10 for weed eating and that took all of fifteen to twenty minutes to walk around the house, the side walk and maybe a couple trees. That was the old days, I just passed the work of mowing a lawn of one of the rental houses off to my sister, she needs the money, but for her it ill take longer because she is weaker and slower, but just the same its money coming in. I had been doing it for the past 4 years, I will if she doesnt. Now I have a nice riding mower at home, no trailer to haul it, that I am about to fire up and get started. I have 2 acres to keep up, about a 1/2 acre will be plowed in a month or so but the grass and weeds need to be cut down in the meantime. I put a new battery in last fall and I am hoping it still has a charge, if not I will hook up the charger. So far I have not had to put a new plug in the push mower, I did buy 3 last week, just to have them on hand. Do you keep your own lawn?

I need to buy another lawn mower and a weed eater. Both of mine broke last year and I haven't been able to replace it.

@andriaperry I bought a used push mower two years ago. The tires fell off last year. Lol, so we took tires off one we had that wouldn't run. Guess what! the tires fell again. It finally broke the piece to where we could not pout tires back on. I heard they are selling push lawn mowers somewhere from $150 brand new. I need to find out where before prices go up.

Our lawn mower that was brand new just a couple of yrs ago would not start last yr at all. I am sure we will try it again real soon and see if it will start up. If so, we will be able to do our own lawn as we have time, otherwise we might have to get someone from across the street to do it for us. There is other jobs we are thinking about having one of them come help do anyways to give them a chance at some extra $$.

My rider may need a new spark plug, its turning over but wont fire off, I ran the battery down trying so its on charge now. Sometimes you need to clean the air filter too, and / or the gas filter may need washing out.

I am so grateful that when I was growing up, our home never had "mens' jobs" and "womens' jobs". Mom often went out to mow the lawn, and she quite enjoyed it! And when Dad cooked, it was always a treat for us!

@andriaperry It's rather fun when a couple comes together and makes the decisions to just do what needs to be done, regardless of the job. Keeping a home neat and tidy is healthy for both partners, and sharing the responsibility is very healthy for the relationship!

In a way that is how me and Tony always did things, I would keep the yard up, he NEVER mowed it and when it hit him to cook he would make us dinner and not just on the grill either.

I don't have a clue what the rate is to have the place mowed, never had the need - my husband does it most of the time but I do love to mow so sometimes I fight him for the mower. The new cub cadet is like driving a car except for the bugs in hair!

Once I thought about adding a lawn mowing fee to the rentals, so that it would actually get done. But to heck with it, let them do it.

i used to, but my dad wants to do it, he says it helps him not to feel lazy in his retirement. i tried helping him, but he tells me to leave it to him. only time i do it now is when its too hot for him to do it or when he asks me to. i hate using weed eaters, they either are difficult to start or feel very awkward. for some reason ive always had trouble with them.

I + did my dads mowing when he got down sick, for many years. Its good of you to take care of your dad like that. Weed eaters are hard to start, I dont like them either.

I have said it before and I will say it again - you are a very self sufficient lady. At my home we pay someone to mow the lawn whenever it needs it.

Thank you, I try. I can say that I have paid for the old home place to be mowed when I was away or someone needed the money.
