If you see an error such as a typo/spelling error on myLot what do you do?

Most humans make errors, and since I assume the majority of myLot members are human, we make mistakes, it's a given. It may not happen often, but when it does, it does - it is not the end of the world as we know it. I have received private messages stating that I have a typo in my title or in the post itself. I don't mind someone pointing that out as long as it's done in a polite way and not a "gotcha" way. I prefer to receive those messages privately compared to in the comment section. I was just scrolling through and noticed a big typo in the title of a post. Now, I don't know the person, never read or saw that person before today. I checked the bio and the person has been here a long time. Therefore, I'm not sure if I should point out the error or not. I started to but changed my mind. If I 'knew' the person it would be a different story. What are your thoughts? Would you point out a typo no matter who did it? Are you afraid of offending a fellow myLot member? I sure hope I don't have a typo in this post!! Photo from Pixabay

Personally ...i don't think typo's are that big a deal anymore. There is a good chance that even with one, it is possible to understand what was intended to be said. So i don't do anything for spelling errors or things of that nature. However, if a person has forgot to add something to the post that they clearly intended to (when discussing a picture or quote or something)...then i let them know as politely as i can.

I think many of us who typed for a living 35 years do pay attention...you're right they don't change the post...but....

I have messaged members before about typo errors - but only those I know well. The "o" on my laptop malfunctions - so many times after rechecking I find that it has been left out.

@allen0187 I had to proof read many things for different people as part of my job so it is a habit and always will be.

Some are so obvious and some make a different, especially when it comes to spelling.

I would do exactly as you've done - sort of. If I know the person and think they'd prefer to know and have the opportunity to correct the error, I'll PM them. If I don't know them I might just leave it. However, and particularly if the typo is in the title, I might PM and VERY POLITELY tell them.

I only hesitated because I didn't want to come off as ... well, as a 'b' since the person has been here for a long time.

@AbbyGreenhill I can understand. Some don't like to be corrected. Just for the record, I'm always happy for you to correct me.

I agree with you, I don't mind being told there is an error- if it is done nicely. There is a member who has a habit of pointing out every little error in posts. It bugs me, but I leave it alone.

I would only point out one that matters...the wrong words or misspellings can make a difference.

I always point then out whenever I encounter them because most people would want to amend it. I know that I would prefer to be told for the very same reason.

I am human. I make mistakes. If a Mylotter wants to bring to my attention, great! If not, that is fine too. I do my best to not offend anyone. I'm sure I have at some point on here. I'm not afraid of it one way or the other. If I do I do and that is life. I try to be tactful and respectful and expect the same from others.

I'm likely to not say anything as long as I get the meaning. If I manage to get a joke out of it, I might tell in a funny way, otherwise I move on. I wouldn't be offended if someone pointed out a typo of mine, I'm usually quite self-conscious and I'll be glad if they can help me making my post "perfect". We're humans after all, it's okay to make a few mistakes. And we're also required to have some thick skin in the online world, some people can be mean.

I usually do exactly what you do, I inform through a Private Message. I remember that someone was offended by the fact that a "non" English speaking pointed out a misspelled word, so now I am very cautious, if I do not know the person I do not inform.

@AbbyGreenhill A few I do, but I know them well enough to know they'd want it pointed out/explained, and I do it carefully and politely. Otherwise I only do if it's really funny.

I wouldn't point it out but I have had people do it to me and I went and made the correction. It was people I know on here though so it wasn't so bad. I wasn't offended. The person may appreciate knowing about the mistake.

I don't mind if it's pointed out to me as long as the person is not nasty about it. If I know the person I may let them know. All I know is that I am human and I certainly make my share of mistakes.

I personally would not point out a typo or spelling error. Spelling & grammar are one of my pet peeves & I can't help but notice them. We don't know what other people's backgrounds are or their education level. I'd just read the post & move on.
