Coming Down in Buckets!

Rain, through my windshield

We have had a lot of rain in the last couple of weeks. This afternoon I had to pick my granddaughter Sandra up after school. Never mind we were under a severe thunderstorm watch. The rain was coming down in buckets, the lightning was flashing and the thunder was crashing. All the kindergarteners were behind their teacher to be collected by parents, grandparents or going home on the schoolbus. Some careful planning went into this pickup. We made sure Sandra could get in on the passenger side and that I could access the seat belt from the front seat. We arrived home without getting too wet and the rain let up for the minute it took us to get ourselves into the house.

Wow it looks nasty. Glad it let up for a minute so you could get inside.

We have water everywhere. The septic bed is flooded out again. This means I'll be very careful with my water usage (a good excuse to leave the dishes)

@Morleyhunt No kidding! Driving is hard enough in that kind of weather when all of your attention is focused on the driving! I remember being in my car in that kind of weather one day and pulling over, shutting off the car and just sitting there for a while, listening to the rain. It was a very relaxing time and when the rain began to let up, I started up the car and continued to my destination. It's a very cool memory!

@Morleyhunt Sometimes I take a photo but it does not do the actual scene much justice.

Thank you. It's always hard to predict if the photo will show what it is you want it to show. This time it did so.

@lovinangelsinstead21 so true. Most of the photos I take are disappointing. Every now and again I have photo that does an excellent job of showing what I intended to show.

Right now I'm trying to decide if I can risk walking to the library 7.5 kilometres. Then I probably also need to walk home. The forecast is calling for rain until 8PM. Maybe I will try for a short walk now and another short one right after lunch if it's not raining. It's too cold to allow myself to be out in the rain for a long time.

@DianneN I went for a quick 2.5 K. It was starting to rain again as I approached the house. I'll try for another walk after lunch.

@JudyEv yes and no. It's pretty flat, but we are higher than the Humberstone marsh which will hold a lot of water.

And it came down like that for almost two hours...5 cm (2 inches)....water, water everywhere. The fields are flooded......the storm drains can't handle the runoff, and the Great Lakes are much higher than normal,

@Morleyhunt That's a lot of water in such a short time. Drains can really struggle to cope with so much water in such a short time. I think you're up high aren't you?

It is considered early in the year for thunderstorms, but we have had several already. This one had a lot of flash and bang as well as a lot of rain.

@Morleyhunt i have washed our laundry this morning and it was so hot; right now though, it is turning gloomy with the grey clouds above, so i told my son to collect the clothes hung to be sun-dried. for sure, there will be thunderstorms later.

I'm actually envious! We had a good amount of rain this winter (we needed it as we were in a drought) and now with the warm days I miss that! Our school streets get flooded when it rains really hard . . . we have to strategize the drop off and pick up too!

@Morleyhunt I wish we could trade weathers for a while! The grass definitely needed cutting at the time here . . . but everyone loved the green we got back . . . so many people left their yards as is until it was all over. But we could see a lot of weeds took over as well. I hope your grass didn't drown!!

My husband is getting so tired of the rain. The grass needs cutting, but it's too wet to get the mower onto the grass. This morning he suggests....maybe the grass will drown.

Smart thinking Gramma! Its been very wet these past few weeks hasn't it? Parts of our back yard look like a swamp, we're waiting for a swamp monster to come out of there one of these days!

@Morleyhunt She's showing you she's growing up Gramma, or maybe she was a little intimidated by the thunder and lightening-I know I would be!

The trick was getting her into the van quickly. Usually she gets in on the passenger side, and I buckle her in....then I walk around and get in....

@Morleyhunt We have exactly the same forecast, only Sunday here seems to be a little better, but they usually cheat for Sunday, because they expect tourists to come.

@Morleyhunt that sounds horrible with all that water and nowhere for it to go. I hope you get some sunny weather soon so that water can go back to normal levels. Having a flooded septic must cause a whole other set of problems

@Marilynda1225 that's when we want to post the sign....if it's yellow, let it mellow, if it's brown, flush it down. An hour without rain and it subsides enough for one or two flushes. Mist of the time we are just the two of us. We manage

It is so wet.... I everything is waterlogged.my septic bed is flooded out again....the water has no place to go. Lake Ontario is about two feet above normal. I've noticed Lake Erie seems to be high as well.

@chrissbergstrom we have more water standing around than I've ever seen. To actually flood would take a lot, although the water levels in the Great Lakes are considerably higher than normal. This after a couple of years in decline.

I knew I was picking her up at school. When I stopped at the library the sky opened up. They also to,d me that the worst weather was expected to be right around the time my granddaughters school let out. I was early enough to have my choice of parking spots and then it was just a matter of rearranging what was in the van so I gpcould get from front to back with ease.

Most of the children are bussed to this school. There were a lot of parents and grandparents at the school collecting their children. Everyone was polite and considerate. Even the passing cars gave the adults and children the right of way. Less time standing in the rain.
