Mid April welcomes in the Indian new year It is spring time and time for celebrations. The spring festival has varied names in the different parts of the country. In Assam ,where I stay its is called Rongali Bihu., rongali meaning joyous
Spirits lighten as the people feel a oneness with nature.Just as the trees around are dressing up in new greenery , the people too wear new clothes on this occasion. Games and cultural events are organised. It has become a big affair and well known artists perform at these Bihu functions on the stage.
The celebrations continue throughout the month and every locality has their own event where troupes of musicians perform in the open air. The bihu songs are accompanied by indigenous instruments like big drums, pipes made of buffaloe horns, brass cymbal, bamboo clapper and flutes .The dancers wear the traditional muga silk and have orchids in their hair.
The rythym of the dancing feet and the music are so infectious that the whole crowd feel like getting up and dancing.

@responsiveme The are where I live is full of mulberry plants, because here was a place of silk production. My grandmother worked in a silk factory when she was a young girl, in Italy, but only few kilometers from here.

@FayeHazel of course , I do and a couple of old ones as well which were my mil's.
It has become very costly now and pure muga is hard to get.
