I'll just talk among myself

Have you heard the expression 'just talk among yourselves for a while'? We were sitting with two friends the other day and suddenly the three of them (Vince and the two friends) were all tapping away trying to be the first to find out something. I said loudly ‘It’s okay. I’ll just talk among myself’. Maybe it’s time I bought my own phone.
I have long been very anti mobile phones. I hate how every second person walks around hanging on their phone as though it’s some kind of security blanket. However more and more I’m having to temper my remarks because they are amazingly handy from time to time.
Back in 2015, we were looking at a dolmen (megalithic tomb) in Ireland and our son started tapping away at his phone. I was just building up a good head of steam to say something when he started telling us all out what we were seeing. So I had to simmer down again. I seem to do a lot of that sometimes.
We’ve used it so much to gather information that I can longer say I wish we didn’t have one. When we were overseas it was particularly useful although buying a new SIM card in every country was a bit of a nightmare.
The photo is of the hold of one of the ferries which go from Ireland to France. You drive your vehicle on amid much noise, shouting and whistle-blowing. This is from our last crossing in 2015. We’ve already booked a passage around 20 June on the last ‘less expensive’ trip (no such thing as cheap) from Rosslare to Cherbourg.
And just two more sleeps till we head for Ireland.

@JudyEv I do feel like snatching up people's phones and hurling them acrossrooms, into the street, pond, etc - many people just can't leave them alone even for a few minutes

@JudyEv it is an addiction for many - they would not cope if the tech suddenly stopped

@LadyDuck It was my job in hairy situations to say 'keep right, keep right'. At one big cross-roads in Austria, we made a mistake and crossed in front of a car full of people. We were in the wrong but luckily everyone was going very slowly and there was no danger of an accident but EVERYone in the car shook their fists at us! I was very embarrassed but Vince thought it was funny. Luckily, being in vehicles, we were out of the way and out of sight in a few seconds.

These days mobile phones are so helpful but I too get angry when people cannot seem to take their faces from the phones. Everyone is at it these days!

@garymarsh6 We make sure we charge up everything (including camera batteries) whenever we stop for the night. We can go one night without power but then we like to camp where we can plug into an electricity supply. We're staying at a donkey farm tonight - 5 euro for power and that's all so that's really good.

I know the feeling - the pros and cons of it all. The phone has its moments - there's a time and place for it, right? It can come in handy no doubt . . . but the other times when the people around me are on their phones just to be on the phone, it makes me sick. Have a safe trip and enjoy!!

Nowadays I don't turn back when someone is talking (hello) aloud as I realize they are on their cellphones.
It is like when couple of days ago one was sounding the horn repeatedly and everyone took a pause not knowing whose attention he wanted to catch - siva

I really hate that. My friends and I never really see each other that much so meeting with them to have relaxing time makes me stress out when they are attending their phones several times. And when I did complain a little they told me that i should have app games in my phone. Isn't that rude? If you play app games while your with your friends that you dont see so much, I would feel insulted .

@diosabella You should invite them to visit you - no phones allowed. I wonder how many, if any, would turn up?

@JudyEv My point exactly. Now I usually decline any meet ups. Its kind of waste of time. I'm travelling for 3 to 4 hours just to see them and they will be just like busy with their phones. Unless its important to meet.

This thing happens with me all the time. Whenever I meet my friends, half of the time they're all busy in phones. I hate it so much.

@JudyEv it is very annoying. Many times I told them to put their phone down and let's have some actual interaction, but still.. they don't do that.

All your traveling you are able to do must be exciting. I always have my phone with me when I travel but most of the time am too busy to even remember to take many pictures etc to show everyone. But I guess mine stems back to even when I had a camera I did not take many pictures either

Vince takes a lot of photos and I used to get impatient waiting around for him. Now I have my little point and shoot camera I am too busy taking photos myself to worry about what Vince is doing.

We've been several times now as our son now lives in Ireland. We'll be here till the 20th then taking the ferry to the continent then we'll be back in Ireland for perhaps another month. We're booked to go home on the 24 September.
