The Monkey Pole, Skerries, Ireland

Today we passed through Skerries, a fishing town on the east side of Ireland just a south of Drogheda. I was intrigued with this pole and on closer inspection I found it was a memorial for people lost at sea. The original Sea Pole was an icon in the town and was formerly known as the Monkey Pole as night-time revellers would often climb the pole after leaving the pubs and clubs in the area. Officially it was an Apparatus Pole used by the coastguard to hold rescue equipment such as ropes and pulleys. It has since been modified for health and safety reasons. The names of the vessels and individuals lost at sea are engraved on plaques around the memorial. The sea here has claimed many lives and there are over 270 entries listed in the plaques. It is very fitting that the victims are remembered in this way. Sorry about the sideways photo. I'll try to correct it. Later: Can't correct it - except to turn it on its other side. I'll only put up landscape orientation photos in future.

Pity that the pole sticks out sideways in your photo. :-(

Because of the height of the pole I took the photo in portrait orientation. Now it will only point right or left but not up and down. Note to self: only take photos in landscape style.

That's very informative. I feel for those people who have lost their lives. Do they keep on adding names on the plaques/.

I doubt that they'd keep adding names but perhaps they do.

Skerries is where my 88 yr old Mother still cannot stop talking about. She spent her summers there with her Aunts and loved it.

It's a lovely little town. There were big dark rainclouds there when we were there.

@TiarasOceanView It may not have been. I think it was about 2000 that it went up.

@JudyEv Try yourself, I only rotated of 90ยบ, Anyway, with a little trick you can make it more horizontal. I am doing it, here it is, it required a 2 degrees correction. Now the horizon is straight but not too much the pole.

THanks very much Anna. But surely my original was more vertical and the horizon more horizontal!!

@LadyDuck I tried to rotate it in one of the simple photo programmes I use but it still loaded sideways. The horizon is beautifully straight now.

Interesting history about those lost at sea. Sometimes my photos come out sideways too. I don't know how to correct it.

@JudyEv I have had the same problem with some of my photos. It's frustrating to me.

I did turn it a quarter turn but it still showed up sideways but pointing the other way.

That is a fitting memorial and I hope the names on it become lesser and lesser

I'm sure in the old days there were many more lost at sea.

It still looks like something that would attract the young, the drunk and the foolish to try to climb it.

I'm sure some still do but it's a bit safer now and there are big disclaimers everywhere if you should hurt yourself on it.

Now, that seems very interesting! I am sure the sea has claimed many lives in that area.

I'm sure all fishing villages have lost many people to the sea. She is a hard mistress.

try running it through facebook, I load stuff there, then save the image to my pc from facebook, it seems to correct orientation automatically

Only the Irish would put a Monkey Pole in the middle of a traffic circle? After Pub Delights? ha ha ha

Those memorials to lost fisher men and women are quite moving. There is one in Newport, Oregon with names inlaid on the sidewalks for blocks.

It's strange that once you see something for the 'first' time you suddenly seem to come across more of them. I've seen another two since that first one.

Interesting history on that pole. It's fitting they used that pole for the people lost at sea.

Sounds like they had to modify it. Drunk people climbing poles can't end well.

Apparently they've made it safer but there are still disclaimers denying responsibility for any accidents.

Sea-faring families lose members from time to time. The sea doesn't take prisoners.
