The plumber came, took one look at the water heater, frowned, and shook his head. "Senor, you need a new water heater." Then he showed me where the problem was, what it was, and explained why a new water heater is necessary. I asked him to give me an idea of what it will cost to remove the old, put in the new, and how long it would take. Let's just say, the overall cost of installing the new water heater means no new laptop for me this summer. The good news is they can replace it today. Once they get here it should take about 2 hours. At least my missus will be able to take a hot bath tonight.

Aw wish you could have gotten the laptop. Maybe you will be able to get a better one when you do though. Well at least this will be done but yes I bet it costs a pretty penny. Senor. haha

It would have been a while yet before I ordered the new laptop. I haven't really started researching what I want yet.

They may be, but better to have them do it right the first time than to have to fix my mess and then do it right after I do it wrong.

That happened to me a few years ago, $1000 later I had a new heater but honestly I think I was ripped off.

I priced similar water heaters online and the company I use was competitive. When you add in the parts, tax, labor, and the fact they found and fixed problems I would never have noticed, it was worth the cost.

Well you know what they say, happy wife, happy life lol We have hot water heat so it is just part of our furnace. I never have to worry about it but when it does go, it will be more than a laptop I will be passing on. Though, prices are pretty low on some laptops.

@DWDavis Yes we have priced a new furnace and it will be more than $5,000. We are trying to get more years out of the old one.

In our old house the water heater was tied into the furnace, and we had to replace the furnace as it was circa 1953. Fortunately, my missus mother was still the owner when it happened and she paid for the replacement. Only fair, really, she's the one who kept turning the heat up to 90F (30C) in the house while the missus and I were at work.

That's a good thing for your missus. I'm sorry it deals you out of a new laptop. However, a new water heater is important to your health and welfare.

Such a shame. We've had to replace our hot water heater a few times over the years. Thankfully hubby has gotten really good at it, so all we do is go to Home Depot and buy a new one, then call a junker to come get our old one for scrap metal.

@DWDavis As long as it's pvc pipe he can do any plumbing work. He can't do copper pipes though. When you're living on a budget you have to learn how to do many repairs around the house because you can't always afford to hire someone to do it for you.

This is the 3rd one we've had. We replaced the original about 10 years ago. From what I've read, getting 10 years out of an electric water heater isn't bad. Kudos to your husband for being able to do the work.

We had to do that a couple years ago. But it was covered on the house warranty - so luckily we did not have to pay a whole lot to get it replaced. Well, maybe you could still get that laptop, just maybe a little later in the year.

I'm not in dire need of a laptop. My old one does well enough for what I do at home and my laplet works well enough when I'm on the road camping and such. Perhaps waiting will allow me to get an even more capable new one later this year.

I've had to have hot water heaters replaced and I know they aren't cheap. But, having hot water does seem more important than a new laptop. I'm sure the missus will be happy

The missus was very happy to be able to fill the tub with hot water instead of running out 2/3 of the way.

This time of year it is rather hot here, but my missus still likes to relax in a hot bath before bed.

We are fortunate, I guess to have two water heaters. One is not working but it is only to the washer and guest bathroom.
