Have You Ever Mixed Crab Apples With Your Pie Apples?

We had a lot of apples pies when we arrived here in Manitoba last August. We finally decided to make apple pies... probably too many of them to be honest but here is the trick. We used half regular apples and then half crab apples and the flavor was awesome. The "regular" apples were a little too sweet for our liking and that is without sugar so we decided to add crab apples to the filling. It was awesome. Okay, if you like your pies sweet, you might still want to add sugar... it's all a matter of taste. We have slowly lost our taste for sugar thank goodness... except for chocolate lol... but that is another story.

I haven't a clue... it was just an apple tree on the property, but we did spot two crab apples and using them made a huge difference!! I hate apple pies that are too sweet!

@Hate2Iron , I have not lost my taste for sugar. But I wouldn't mind a slice of that Apple pie you mention. :)

I don't make apple pies but it sounds like it would be an interesting flavor combo. When I lived in PA we had a big crab apple tree..here in VA though I haven't seen any of them.

We do not have crab apples, but I mix cranberries to the apples to make the pies less sweet.

I never thought to add crab apples to pie to cut back on the sweetness. What a great idea

My father had crabapple trees, but we don't. I stopped eating sugary desserts years ago unless it's birthday cake! lol
