Yikes a Bear!!

Our township has a Facebook page which includes all things safety, local happenings and whatever else might be important to the residents here. Yesterday a bulletin was posted about a bear in someones backyard. All I could think of was what? here? we aren't even in the woods per se. I know bear sightings have been very frequent lately up in the Poconos where my son and daughter live but in my area of Pennsylvania we have mostly corn fields and farms. So, I was quite taken aback when a bear popped up in someones yard. The notice informed us all to be on alert and to make noise when going outside especially early mornings and nights when walking dogs etc. My daughter in law came across a bear on their bike path last week and posted a picture of it on our family Facebook page. I wouldn't have stopped to take a picture but would have probably fainted. My daughter has also posted pictures of bears in their backyard and they look more like cubs but still....a bear is a bear and if it's a cub then the momma isn't too far away. I don't think I'd be too happy seeing a bear wandering through my backyard and I'm going to make sure I make a lot of noise when I take the dogs out.

A bear is a bear, no matter what the size or the age! What are the authorities doing?

The authorities don't do anything unless people complain about them. We were all use to them and knew enough not to approach them. Same as the adult deer.

@ramapo17 I prefer to live in a tame city with no wildlife except violent human beings.

My son's mother in law has seen them a few times at her Connecticut home. Fortunately, I haven't had the pleasure.

I don't think a bear is something you'd want to see taking a leisurely stroll through your backyard but maybe Doodles would scare them away

@Marilynda1225 I have seen so many bears in my yard and I love watching them especially the young ones.

@Marilynda1225 You mean Mr. Fraidy Cat? I have him running to the house when I say, "No big bad snakes. Hiss!"

I would be surprised if there was a bear sighting anywhere around here too - it'd be so out of place for the bear (how would he have gotten here?!). And it'd be scary for the bear - no telling what a scared bear might do.

It might be more commonplace than I'm aware of for bears to be living here but unusual to see them wandering through someones backyard. At least the authorities warned us

@Marilynda1225 It was not unusual to drive down the street and have to stop for the bear to cross the road. One day many people were coming out of the post office and a bear was crossing the road. He never stopped walking and kept going. I never had a camera with me to get their pictures.

They are great to watch. You just have to know not to go running up to them.

I'd find that quite scary too. At kangaroos aren't dangerous the way bears could be.

I've never seen a kangaroo in real life but they look cute in pictures. Even though they aren't dangerous do you find them in your yard?

@Marilynda1225 They regularly come into the garden area although it isn't fenced off from the rest of the property. They like roses and various other plants so some of our shrubs have netting around them. We have bird baths at the front and back doors and they quite often drink from the one at the front.

@TiarasOceanView We always loved seeing the wild life. The skunks scared me more than anything as I was afraid of getting sprayed by them.

My husband and I had 2 Newfoundland dogs which look just like bears. We went to take the dogs for a walk and when we went outside there was a bear in the yard. We looked at each other and we went back in the house.

I've never lived anywhere that bears are common to, and I'd think that if I did they would really scare me.

Yup they scare me too even small ones. I know they are usually looking for food and we've been told to keep our garbage pails inside so as to not attract them

After living in the Poconos for over ten years, I got use to seeing them in my yard often. All the ones I encountered never did any damage.

My kids live in the Poconos and bears are common but they still keep a safe distance from them. One day a bear was peering in the window at my sons house. That almost gave my daughter in law a heart attack but they made a racket and scared it off.

@Marilynda1225 my friends in the Poconos had them go right up to her screen porch when she was reading. She told them to go away and they did.

I would not be happy either. It will not be good to come home and those bears had broken in the house and torn it up.

Be careful. It sounds dangerous. I've heard of bears turning up in subdivision and it's scary. We've taken wild animals domain and they have no place to go.
