Drive In Movies

This picture was actually taken in 2010, and we were actually at fireworks, not a drive in movie, but I don't have any pics of us at a drive in so this will have to do. We have 2 nearby drive in theaters, and we try to go to them at least once every summer. One is fairly close by while the other is about a 40 minute drive. Obviously we go to that one less frequently, but it depends on what is playing. They usually play a double or triple feature, so I try to pick a night when all the movies that they're playing are ones I want to see. Last night the one that is a bit further away was playing Despicable Me 3, Spiderman, and The Mummy. Hubby had to work his 2nd job, so it was just me and the kids. My daughter wasn't interested, so we invited my son's girlfriend to come along. We only stayed for the first 2, which was long enough! We left at about 1am, and didn't get home till after 2am (after dropping the girlfriend off). It was a nice night, the movies were fun. But it got really cold after the sun went down. We all brought sweaters, but I was wishing I had a blanket or something.. brr! We love the drive in movies, it's such a great experience for the kids. In fact, we've seen more movies at drive ins than at actual theaters. Last year was the first time my boys went to a real theater.. it's just too expensive. But the drive in is really cheap, and you get 2 or 3 movies for one price! I paid $30 for 5 of us, and I didn't buy anything at the concessions because I brought my own snacks and drinks. Have you ever been to a drive in?

Drive in movies were only popular here during the 60s and I had not been to one for a long time, my dad use to bring as there when we were kids but movie houses took it's place. Oh nice family you've got there.

The 2 we have here can get quite crowded, which is nice to see. As long as they have patronage they should stick around for a long time.

It's sad to say that a lot of drive-in's have closed down @katsmeow1213 . The closest one to me is about 45 miles away. I haven't been to one in about 48 years.

When I was growing up I didn't think we had any at all. It was probably 5 years ago or so that we found one of the ones near us, and 3 years ago we found the other one. So we've been going to both ever since. Once a year every year since we first discovered them.

@katsmeow1213 I always liked it when they had 3 or 4 movies in a row on the same night.

That's so cool! And I love how you made do with a different photo than one of at the drive thru; it gets the message across so it's good! I've never been to a drive thru. I remember my mom only ever went to one, and it was The Apple Dumpling Gang. I love that movie.

Other than the kids being older now, that's basically how we look at a drive in movie too. We don't stay in the car, we set up chairs and blankets and sit in front of the car facing the screen.

Growing up we had a drive in theater just a block away from my parent's house. We didn't go a whole lot, so it sure was a treat to go with the family (just my parents and one sister). The drive in was abandoned for a long time . . . and then a big theater complex took over - still there. I was curious about any drive ins left (there basically aren't any locally) . . . apparently there are "pop up" drive ins which I assume are temporary . . . and it seems one location is at the theater parking lot by my parents'!

Cool, have you ever brought your kids? I bet they'd love it. Sometimes our pool will show a movie on a big projector. We went last year, but it was loud and chaotic because most of the kids just wanted to play instead of sitting and watching the movie.

@much2say Ours usually do triple features on the weekends! I don't always stay for all 3 movies though.

@katsmeow1213 I wish they could have that experience, but there aren't any drive-ins locally anymore. I still haven't checked out what this pop up one is all about. I do know the parks, pools, and college have those outdoor movie nights . . . but it's just not the same as a real drive-in. Oh, getting to see a double feature would be too cool for them . . . that's unheard of anywhere else!!

I remember going to the drive-in movies quite a lot when I was a kid, and it was a really fun adventure. I actually preferred the drive-in to a regular movie theater. But unfortunately, there are no drive-ins left anywhere near me.

That seems to be what everyone is saying. Guess I'm lucky that I still have drive ins near me.. and that I have my choice of 2 to go to.

@katsmeow1213 I would love to see drive-ins make a huge comeback, so that young people of nowadays can experience what it was like to enjoy a movie from the comfort of your car!

I went to drive ins when young and a few times in the early 90s. The drive in theater is basically extinct in the LA area.

It's basically extinct everywhere, but what a fun experience it is! I wish more places would bring it back.

I loved them when I was younger. I haven't been to one in years. When our children were little we did it often. Great fun for families.

We enjoy it.. I'm sure I'll still go even when my kids are older. Sometimes the teenagers like to come too if it's playing a good movie.

I used to go with my brothers and parents in my pajamas. lol. I have also gone on dates with boyfriends and once with my husband. Sadly, those drive-ins are long gone here. It must be due to the lack of land.

The 2 we have are pretty far out in the country. I'm really glad we still have them and my kids are able to enjoy them.

They removed all the drive in theatres around here. I do remember going to them as a child and as a teen

I have, as a kid my mom took us maybe e times a summer. But ours is about 45-60mins away too and only plays 2 movies. Well worth it though. Last time we went was probably 11-15 years ago. But i dod go once about 2-4 years ago with my bf. I prefer movie theater though

It has been many years since I thought of a drive-in-movie. Yes, I have been to one and cannot remember it. It was so long ago. We do not have them here in Israel. We have movie theaters or me that loves to watch movies from Netflix right in the comfort of my own home.
