I just had 2 of my dogs fixed yesterday at the vet’s. I am to keep them on their chain and quiet for the next 10 days so they don’t tear out their stitches. The older one is 4 years old and this isn’t my problem. Kiko is my problem because he is the most active of all the dogs. He is the one who wants to run and play the most. Keeping him calm and attached is driving him crazy because he can’t run and play. Do you have any suggestions for me on this? I have never hand an issue in the past when I have fixed one of my animals. It was quite easy to keep them down and not too active. I had no idea Kiko would be such a mess.

I do not remember how it was when my dog was fixed, but, I will tell you what I did when I had my first cat fixed. I put a mattress down and we all slept there because she loved to run around and I kept a close eye on her. I am not sure if that will help you at all.

My baby of 6 months was good. He took off his bandage and left his stitches. However, the older one of 4 years was terrible. He took off his bandage and stitches. I finally had to put him in a plastic collar and leave it on him until the place healed and closed up. Took longer and I had to keep changing the bandages out every day so it would heal. Now they are both fine and back to normal.

Looks like you have gotten a lot of good advice. I am more of a cat person. Have had some good dogs down through the years though. Hope Kiko behaves himself and is all healed soon.

@celticeagle That would be nice. Then I could understand why Dakota is so grumpy all the time now. Befoer he was never like this. Just recently he has become grumpy.

Yes it is a little bit of a stress right now. I have 10 days of this. My one in the picture is a real grump. I think he is really mad at me right now because I had him fixed. I wanted to do it when he was a baby like the other one but we decided to wait and let him mate a few times before fixing him. Now I am thinking that was a mistake.

You could have asked something a little easier, like how to build a nuclear reactor.

Lively animals are always a problem when operations and stitches are involved. Usually (especially with dogs) its a matter of keeping them from biting, licking or scratching the wound and that's generally dealt with by putting them in one of those plastic lampshade collars ... they look SO sorry for themselves with them and keep bumping into things but it can't be helped! You say that Kiko is a 'he'. He should have only two or three stitches and they will itch for a week or so and he will want to lick the area but he mustn't! One of those collars should be the answer.

My vet didn't give me one. I will check with another vet in my area and buy one for him. He has already taken his bandage off twice. The problem with Kiko is that he has such a small neck. There are not too many things out there for such a neck as he has. Nice to see you Owlwings. It has been a long time since I was last here.

@poehere I was going to welcome you back when I first saw you had returned but, somehow, I didn't get round to it! Sorry! You were missed and it was nice to see you back!

@owlwings Thank you so much. I guess 13 months is a long time. Had a lot going on and no time to be here.

Perhaps Kiko needs more activities. Is it fine to let him play and run in your garden? Perhaps right now he is just little and therefore his behavior is also like a child. He needs to have some trainings.

He gets plenty of training. He is just an active dog and loves to run and play. For the next 10 days I need to keep him quiet because of his surgery he had yesterday. Right now I have found a way to keep him a bit quiet and give him a bit of freedom. I have him in my office and I have attached a rather long rope to his dog chain. He can play in the living room, my office, and even go outside a bit to make his toilet. So today he is a bit more happy.

@amadeo I live on a small island in the South Pacific. Plus i already have 6 dogs of my own. I don't need any more vet bills if the dogs get out and get in a fight over a female. I would rather just fix them and be fine.

Number one, there are too many dogs already here on the islands. Two, it is better for the dog if you don't want to use him for breeding. Three, this calms the dog down. Four, it keeps the dog out of fights with other male dogs over a female in heat. I always fix my dogs at 6 months. With my male and female Bichon I decided to leave them and let them have a litter of puppies. Now the female had problem after delivering her puppies and she is sterile. I no longer need my male to make babies with her. Plus in the past 3 weeks he has found a way out of my yard to go find a new female. I need this to stop because he will get hurt and I don't want this. We have been looking and looking and have fixed the places we think he is getting out. But for some reason he has found another place. This is the first time ever he has done this and gotten out of the yard. He is 4 years now and has always stayed in the yard.

It is odd that you were not given a cone and no sedatives. Luckily it doesn't take long for boy dogs to heal with getting fixed. Good job for getting them fixed though!

I have called 5 vets here on the islands and all of them tell me they don't have one I can buy. Go figure. You would think that vets carried these items especially for a small puppy of 6 months. I always fix my dogs. I don't like it when they aren't fixed. They have a territory war aruond the house and yard and this makes me crazy.
