London falls silent.

Anyone who has been to London will probably have seen the houses of Parliament and Queen Elizabeth II tower which houses Big Ben. Due to some repair work on this ancient monument the bells are going to be silenced for up to four years to protect the hearing of those doing the repair work in the tower. There has been an uproar as to why it is taking too long to do this work. Hopefully they will come to some agreement to get the bells chiming as soon as possible. The bells will still chime for Remembrance Sunday and for the New Year but the rest of the year they will remain silent. Some people refer to the tower as Big Ben but it is actually the bell within the tower that is named Big Ben. It was originally cast in 1857 and was going to be called the Victoria Bell after Queen Victoria but cracked it on first testing. A new one was cast at the Whitechapel bell foundry in 1859 but that too cracked. Instead of casting a new bell they turned it three quarters and used a lighter hammer! Big Ben weighs in at 13.7 British imperial tons (13919.84 KGS) and is 7ft or 2.2 meters tall. It only chimes on the hour. There are four smaller bells in the tower hence the sounds of the chimes are known as the Westminster chimes which strike up every quarter of an hour. The clock faces on each of the four sides are 23ft (7m) tall and the glass is opal glass that is lit up at night. The hour hand is 9.2ft (2.8m) and the minute hand is 14ft (4.3m) long. The photo is of Queen Elizabeth (Big Ben) tower at the Palace of Westminster london, otherwise known as Parliament.

Sounds that you routinely hear, are eerily missed when quieted. Surprise. I thought the clock was Big Ben, not the bell itself. It must be my day for gaining knowledge.

@Morleyhunt Heaven. In the UK we are far too overcrowded to get so much peace and quiet!

@garymarsh6 the peace and quiet is one of the reasons I love living in a rural area. Sunday nights when the car races are nearby are stressful, because of the intense noise level.

I do as well but it never occurred to me to look up the Big Ben @garymarsh6 I've been very intrigued with the Romans, Vikings and Druids, but there seems to be precious little that actually tells very much about those eras. Vikings never kept written historical events so I have had read a little about archeological finds, what little there is. As for the Druids, I haven't found very much that is an actual account of who they were, most anything I have found is folklore that is probably exaggerated.

@rebelann More then likely. The druids still celebrate midsummer and winter solstice at Stonehenge each year!

Four years is a very long time and you are going to miss the bells. I hope they will come out with an idea to start sooner to make the bells sound earlier.

@QuantumJoy The problem is not to make noise for those who work there, so this is not a solution.

What a shame that tourists will miss this. We heard it chime when we were in London both times. 4 years is a long time!!!

I know sensibility gone crazy! Far too over protective in my humble opinion. This is health and safety at its worse!

Interesting! So when it rings on the hour, does it ring the time such as midnight 12 times? Does it ring day and night?

We have some photos of Big Ben that my parents took when we lived in England. I'd like to visit again. I can't remember England since I was so young when we were there.

Oh my, four years seems a bit long. I hope they find a way to let the bells chime soon again! And, um, I thought the tower was Big Ben...So thank you for some new knowledge, Gary.

Sadly the bell foundry closed this year. It is a grade II building and to bring it up to specification following new building laws would cost around £8m pounds. It has been in existence since 1570. Such a shame that the most famous bell foundry has finally closed its doors.

That could be a little quiet for a while, but then I suppose all things need maintaining so that they can last another 1500 years or more
