We didn't actually go that far but we did take a canal boat ride on the Erie Canal. We got on the boat in Pittsford, NY and went to Lock 32. Going through a lock is a very interesting experience. Millions of gallons of water are released and the boat rises more than 25 feet. We then had dinner at a restaurant along the canal. We sat outdoors and enjoyed the view and the cool weather.

I grew up very near to the Erie Canal. I have fished in it, I've played in the water and never once have I taken a boat ride though the canal and locks. The locks were another thing we often stopped to watch the boats go through, I noticed on the Thruway they have opened a new rest area right next to the Canal and locks so you can pull off the highway, park and walk up to the canal and watch.

It is, it rises pretty slowly but when you get to the top it is wild and then slowly we went back down.

It was fun, there are several different cruises, next time I would take one that travels more without the lock, the lock took almost all of the time.

@BelleStarr My kind of cruise. I can see land and it won't take weeks and tons of money.

Thank you yes, we were looking for just the perfect place to do these, there are several options along the canal and this one was less than 5 miles from our hotel.

lol It really was amazing. I would love to take a ride on the Nile but for now, the Erie Canal will have to do. The way that locks work is so interesting.

@BelleStarr The one I watched, the water was lower down to about 20 feet, fascinating really. I never knew that there was such a system.
