The Chocolate Chip Cookie: An All-American Treat

Here is a brief history of the chocolate chip cookie; that warm, soft, sweet and chewy comfort food. The ultimate in unique desserts which found a place into America's kitchens. The cookie will turn 79 this year, a success story which started in Whitman, Massachusetts in 1938. Ruth Whitman, the owner of the Toll House Resturarant added cut up bits of chocolate to her cookies to complement her ice cream. One year later she sold the rights to her recipe and Toll House name to the Nestle' company for $1. Two events according to Wikipedia cemented the chocolate chip cookie's reputation into the American mainstream. The opening of the Toll House Restuarant during the Great Depression of the 1930's, and America's entrance into WW II. Thanks to Mrs. Whitman and her husband perservering through those hard times, they evenutually found success in their restuarant business, and introduced the chocolate chip cookie. And, by the time the United States sent soldiers to Europe, the cookie was wildly popular and a great item to send to those fighting men overseas.
