Beware of media manipulations

Manipulating the media with a political goal is not something new. Later the trickery is discovered, and more it has some chances to work. The oldest I remember was the story of the mass graves of Timisoara in Romania in 1989. The organizer was a French «journalist» (He had been a high public servant in the French administration, and my father was knowing him very well to have worked with him several years.) : the opponents of the Ceausescu regime dig up 20 corpses in a cemetery and a properly staging was organized to take a few pictures sent to the media presenting it as a mass grave of victims of the communist regime. Big success ! In the following days all newspapers competed to have the best title : «Dracula was communist», «Slaughter»,etc... There had been thousands people killed and dropped in mass graves, according to some media, and a radio presenter launched a call to create some international brigades ready to die for Bucarest... It was a hoax, but when the media realized it 2 months later, this media manipulation had done its job : the communist regime and Ceausescu were no more there. Something that seems to have still some success is the manipulation of data that has been made by the far right in Germany about the crimes committed by immigrants. When I explained yesterday in a discussion to a member that they were committing less crimes than Germans, she told me that they were mass rapers, I had just to read the media to know it ! Hmm, according to the official crime stats in Germany, they do not commit many more rapes than Germans, with respect to their number : 458 rapes and attempts of rape were committed by the 1.5 million of immigrants in Germany in 2015, but some media wrote that they committed 200 000 sexual aggressions ! Playing on fears anchored in the collective unconscious works well, especially to promote xenophobic programs... I realize that I have been victim of a new media manipulation last week with the referendum about the independence of Catalonia. The media have been very quick to give a result of 90% of votes for the independence, although they did not questioned where the independentist government of Catalonia could have counted this North-Korean score : half of the ballot boxes were seized by the Spanish police, the other half dropped in the streets... The stroke of genius was not there though, it was to speak of the brutalities committed by the Spanish police to forbid to people to vote. Nobody likes to see police brutality in a democracy and a poll made last Monday in France was telling that 80% of French people were condemning the violence of the police in Barcelona. Ok, you can add me. I heard the president of the Parliament of Catalonia, Puigdemont, telling that after this violence, the Spanish government would not dare to arrest him. Smart. This guy has nerves. The newspapers spoke of 800 people sent to the emergencies. Today I am learning that only 4 were sent to the emergencies for police brutality, and that 2 left the hospital the same day. Also interesting is this picture of an old woman full of blood and presented as a victim of the police. Well, it seems that she felt in a stair at home. And it also seems that some several years old photos were photoshopped and sent to the media to show this police brutality during the referendum. I have been tricked, like millions of people, by a media manipulation done by the independentists in Catalonia. Reporters without borders complained last week against the pressures made by the Spanish government but told that the worst pressures were coming from the independentists... Yesterday afternoon, I watched an historical moment on the Spanish tv, thanks to @lovinangelsinstead21 : thousands of Spanish and Europeans flags were floating in the streets of Barcelona where hundred of thousands people were assembled to protest against a proclamation of independence. Yes, there were members of the Spanish government there, but there was also a Nobel Peace prize laureate, many intellectuals from all sides, all Catalans ! It was a great mass protest ! On the evening, I watched tv3, the official channel of the government of Catalonia, in Catalan. Guess what ? These people in the streets were «fascists». The populists are the same everywhere, they are liars, but it seems that the lies are too big here, and not supported anymore by the street. Beware of media manipulations.

Do you remember the big manipulation to convince people that the war to free the Kuwait was legit? If the media would not exist, the world would be better.

Good example, as it was also a media manipulation done by states. The same happened for the second Iraq war, with the Americans and Britons telling that Saddam had nuclear weapons to justify this war. I bet that they knew that these H bombs were not existing.

@LadyDuck They know that the trickery will be found soon or later, but as the timing of Puigdemont was short in Catalonia, it was smart. However, not a serious media will believe him now without doing a deep control.

@topffer Exactly, Saddam was a demon and he had to be killed. The situation is even worse now that in the past.

I don't read and follow mainstream media channels for this exact reason. Things always get twisted to serve the agenda of a certain group of people.

They are doing seriously their job most of the time, but sometimes they can be themselves manipulated, and realize it later.

@topffer another thing we could do without. it's like he tweets every small thing he thinks without waiting to process it or figure how it should sound.

The news agencies do not control all the news they receive like they should do, and they are sometimes manipulated. Trump conducts everything via Twitter.

That's the sad problem! The media can make something horrible happen cause they can create stories with no facts to them. We have to check everything out carefully before we express an opinion.

@topffer Yes, a lie can do a lot of damage and even if uncovered it is a lie later. Often irreparable damage has been done. Some people prefer believing the lie rather than the truth.

The media are not checking enough the information they receive, and they can be manipulated for political motives. When they realize the manipulation, it is often too late.

@1hopefulman It is true, especially if it is not discovered quickly : people are turning the page and are believing the lie.

Honestly and I had never seen so many Spanish Flags in the Streets of Barcelona. Great write up too. Tomorrow the Superman of Catalunya will be making a Speech of some kind in his Parliament or whatever he wants to call it. He can never break the true backbone of Catalunya or Spain itself we are made of tougher stuff than that. Who knows what is going to happen tomorrow? Who really knows and its a real enigma but the Socialists are listing to one side of the other Parties or the other one day to favour Podemos and the next to favour Rajoy and then they change their mind again. Mario Vargas Llosa gave a great Speech and Sr. Albiol and Josep Borrell that I had not seen for a long long time. At least they mean what they say and don´t go changing sides from day to the next. 99 percent of the people of Spain and Catalunya want to live their own lives in peace without all the mess that Superman is making of everything. He is affecting business that other sides of Spain do with Catalunya as far as Zaragoza and even over here. Its not fair to the people who have nothing to do with his silly ideas.

@topffer It seems that the real truth will come out in time of what is behind all of those goings on. He should be in Jail for what he has done and the other culprits in other Countries they would have done much worse to him and them can you imagine? Sorry I forgot to tell you the time he is supposed to be making the Speech of his life y mas le vale. Its supposed to be at six o´clock your time in the afternoon and our time so don´t miss it if you can help it. Maybe the Military will take care of it I honestly don´t know as they are not saying they are only supposing. That write up of yours is really good could not have written it like that.

@lovinangelsinstead21 Thank you, I will try to watch the speech. I heard a speech from the ambassador of Spain in France today and controlled what he said as I do not trust any side in this mess, but he was right : many photos posted with Facebook and Twitteer and reproduced by the newspapers were manipulated by the independentists. Puigdemont cannot not know it, but he made use of that to withdraw some political benefit from it. I dislike to be manipulated by politicians.

I do not know what will happen tomorrow, but I think it is time to arrest and send Superman to jail to stop this mess. With the manipulation done it looks more like an attempted coup than like something related to democracy.

It is a true, even good media agencies can be manipulated if their journalists have not controled a news.

@topffer Did you know that the Allies were tampering with the daily horoscope during the second WW, since Hitlers and many of his followers happened to be strong believers? (That manipulation was a good one .)

I agree...and part of that manipulation comes by political regime. They do not allow the media to publish something or force them to keep on publishing something. It happens in all countries. Without such manipulations, India Pakistan would not be as much of sworn enemies as we are.

Political pressures on media are supposed to not happen in Europe, but it happened in Spain, from both state and Catalonia authorities. The independentist government of Catalonia is not the author of most of the media manipulation, but they have assimilated/supported them thinking that it would help their cause. It is very wrong : I have nothing against the independence of Catalonia, but I would never support a pack of liars.

Ah, this is how difficult it is to differentiate fake news from real news. And real news can also be twisted and skewed . . . and how is anyone to know what is the absolute truth?! As they say, we can't believe everything that we see or hear - and it's not always possible for the average person to do complete fact checks . . . almost all news needs to be taken with a grain of salt!

We have more sources available today to check if a news is true or not, but many people do not make this effort and are ready to trust many lies, when they read them in their favorite newspaper or see them on their favorite tv channel.

Exactly. In the past we were often only reading one newspaper and we had to believe it, today with internet we can investigate easily to make our own opinion about something.

It is rare when serious news agencies like Reuters or AFP are tricked and propagate these fake news. The fake pictures in Catalonia have not been propagated by the government of Catalonia, but by people on FB and Twitter, and the government acted like if they were true. Just politics.
