Memories Of Ice Skating

When I was a young girl, I loved to skate outdoor more than indoor. But sometimes, we had no choice but to go to the arena in our small town.
To me, it wasn't the same at all to do the skating there.
I remember how damp it was inside and to this day, I can't stand the smell of an arena.
When we skated outdoor, it was in the yard of the Catholic nuns convent. We lived just across the street then.
I remember how wonderful we felt after an afternoon or evening of skating outdoor. Did we ever sleep well on those nights.
I was just listening to " Tchaikovsky - Waltz of the Flowers" and right away I was transported to those magic moments.
Have you ever skated?

I have skated at the nearest Ice Rink but that was in Birmingham West Midlands.
The ice was very watery and the boots ill fitting and out of date but I had a great time trying to keep on my feet.
Over frozen ponds could also be used to slide on but quite dangerous really.
Nice image also like that one.

I used to take ice skating lessons when i was a child. I loved spending Saturdays at the rink and flying around the ice

Our area does not get cold enough to freeze over and offer ponds/lakes to skate on. We have two ice rinks that are at least 30 minutes away and we never went to them growing up. I am afraid I do not know how to ice skate.

I never could ice skate but I loved to roller skate. Now I can't do either for some reason.

Lovely memories you have of it Marlina. Love that beautiful tune.

I have never been able to ice skate as hard as I tried. I have no balance what so ever.

@marlina I agree. I find professional figure skaters so talented. I know they practice all the time to be able to do what they do so well.

@LeaPea2417 It takes a lot of dedication to be a figure skater.

I love this beautiful waltz. I have never been allowed to go ice skating. I had a bad accident when I was 6, I broke my elbow and had to undergo two surgical operations. The doctors told me to avoid any sport with ice and snow, because the bones become more fragile and I could not afford to have another fracture.

I use to ice skate at an outdoor rink and could never tolerate the bitter cold weather. I never got good at it.

@kobesbuddy I was never very good at it, but sure had a lot of exercise and fresh air as our Quebec winters were long and very cold.

@marlina I use to spend as little time outdoors, as I possibly could, during the winter.

I grew up on a pond and we skated outdoors every day during the winter when the ice was frozen. I have never really skated indoors.

Growing up on a farm, we lived for the day that the ice froze over on the ditch and we were down there every day skating and having so much fun. What people do not realize, is when you skate in a ditch or on a river, the banks spare you from any cold bitter blowing winds. So it is very enjoyable. I have fond memories just like you do too.

what a lovely photo ... and memory... I like ice skating.. I don't get to do it much...but last year I went skating at an outdoor rink in washington it was great as it was dusk and the coloured lights were twinkling... I thoroughly enjoyed it... so thank you for reminding me of it with your post...
