Compulsory organ donors anyone?

The government here are moving to make organ donation an ‘opt out’ process and if you don’t sign a form to say you can’t have your bits, they can take your bits. Some religious groups here are not happy as they don’t like to give or receive organs and certainly something to think about for all of us. Obviously when you die it is the end of you and all your body rots away so it’s best if they use those organs to save lives. There is no internet in heaven and there is no organs. What we don’t want to talk about is the best and most usable organs come from those whose life is tragically cut short and parents at that point can’t bare signing forms to give away organs. In some case when people are made to do something they rebel against it and we could even see a fall in donors in some areas. But many do give and if we can increase that number then more people can be saved. Most people die over the age of 70 in the west and those organs are tired and not much good. We need young bodies to save older bodies. I will sign away my organs like most people when this comes to law but I do have a concern. If this goes ahead there will soon be a surplus of organs and that creates a market for the cash strapped National Health Service to exploit. We know lots or British organs are sold to private hospitals because other religions can’t get those organs at their home countries and so a small but lucrative market there. A private London hospital caters just for rich Muslim clients and those organs have to come from somewhere. Foreigners are paying up to £13,000 for livers and £75,000 for healthy hearts. NHS patients pay nothing. None of that money ends up with the donor’s family I guess. So imagine we are all on a database and a rich person needs a specific organ and you have signed that form. The NHS knows they will get $20 grand for your liver. They have the means of identifying you. Let’s say you are in hospital for a routine procedure. Suddenly you could end up dead! Doctors make mistakes...

I read a book years ago (can't remember what it was called), but it was basically about what you've just described - doctors deliberately killing patients, then selling their organs. It WAS fiction though, and I can't see it actually happening. I've carried a donor card for years but I'm afraid I've outlived my usefulness as I'm now 78.. I think having to 'opt out' rather than 'opt in' is a good idea.

Haha jeez this is a little morbid. But I do agree. If youre just going to rot away, why not save a life?one of my best friends was saved by a liver transplant due to a 12 year old dying in a car accident. I thank the lord for that kid andhis parents choosing to be an organ donor!

Yikes! All good points. Thank goodness my religion forbids donating organs.
