My 'real' name is Judith

Long-term member Always smiling (@allknowing wrote recently about her beloved dog Preiti and how it is often called by other pet names. Mostly the dog is only called Preiti when it is being asked to obey a command. It brought to mind that although my ‘proper’ name is Judith, only my mother ever called me that and nothing else. She told me once she’d had too many milking cows called Judy so she wasn’t about to call to shorten my name. My sister’s boyfriend (later husband and later still ex-husband) named a horse Judy after me. Mostly people, including my husband, call me Judy although I know I’m in trouble if I suddenly hear Judith. Do you have a different name that’s used when you’ve transgressed in some way? The photo is of me looking adorable.

This is a beautiful photo Judith. . My full name is Anna-Maria, Anna is so much more practical and short, only my mother-in-law used my full name. My husband calls me "ducky" , if I hear my real name something is wrong.

@JudyEv I love the word "quaking", very appropriate for a ducky.

It's quite good if a name can't be shortened. My friend's grandchildren are called May and Tom. I can't see them getting anything else but their real names.

When I was born I had many names. I was born with many names. I was called by my Jewish name when I was young and my name was Phyllis so was called Phyll and not the boy's name Phil. When I came to Israel used my English name at first and then changed it to my Hebrew name but shortened it. I have a friend that calls me Hannala at times or other cute names. I also call my Sophie different names. Judith is a nice name but I can see why you go by Judy because of what you said if someone calls you Judith you think you did something wrong. Either name is nice. Was that you when you were a child? You were and still are adorable.

Thanks. I guess I was about 2 when the photo was taken. Mum would bind my hair in rags to try to make it curly for special occasions. Everyone wanted curls when I was young.

@Hannihar Many people don't like their curls nowadays and try to straighten them. I don't think too many are happy with their hair for one reason or another.

@JudyEv Yes Judy I see the curls. When I was young I hated my curly hair and tried everything I could to straighten it. Then one day I realized I love it and do try to destroy it anymore.

Oh you are adorable! Such a cute picture you have when you were young. People call me by my name Honey while other shortens it as "hon". It is very funny when a male calls me hon in public some people would think i've got a romantic relationship with that certain guy. Thinking the word "hon / hun" can be used as an endearment too.

No one in the family called me by my real name including my husband. My brother if he wanted me to do something for him the name would be totally different. Here where we have settled down most choose to add a 'y' at the end of my name which I simply do not like. I keep correcting them. You look the same even now

You've got that right - you do look adorable . I know that a lot of people know they are in trouble when they hear their full name - we called our daughter Melanie (which I think is a beautiful name), but only ever use it in full when introducing her, or when she's in trouble. The same with our son, Timothy. So they are just Tim and Mel.

My name is Marie-Luise. All my relatives use it. My mother saw to this. She said that parents don't think about a name for a baby only to have it distorted later. A classmate shortened it to Malu when I was 11 years old. I liked it and later introduced myself as Malu. It stuck. I'm using Maluse here because four letters are too few for this site.

@JudyEv Thank you. It's a bit old-fashioned in Germany now whereas Italy is full of Maria This or That. There are lots of combinations with the name Maria in Catholic countries. I'm not a Catholic, though.

Considering that Morley isn't my real name.....it's safe to say I use a different name. Making it even more confusing....I rarely use the name on my passport, birth certificate or drivers license. I use a greatly abbreviated and slightly corrupted part of my given name. (10 letters was too long for a 6 pound baby)

@JudyEv my mother and father called me Lany - Lorraine is on my birth certificate but never used until i went to school - but that changed as well. When I got married I had to ask special permission for the minister to call me Lany rather than my real name because that is apparently against the law
