My 2018 New Year's Resolution...Maybe

"Dear New Year's Resolution, Well, it was fun while it lasted. Sincerely, January 2nd" Making new year's resolutions is a tradition many of us have at one time tried. We resolve to change a bad behavior, accomplish a personal goal or improve our present lifestyle. We may have good intentions, but thinking about it is different from doing something about it. Average life span of a New Year's resolution? 2 weeks _71% 1 month _64% 6 months _46% By the middle of the year, more than half gave up. Only 8% of people actually keep their new year resolutions. My 2018 new year's resolution is to start working on the goals that I set in 2017 which I wrote in 2016 after spending the whole of 2015 thinking about which new year resolution to do. Have you made any New year's resolution? Photo image: Pixabay

I guess your resolution to not make any new year's resolution is a resounding success.

I have not made a New Year's resolution for over 50 years. Your observations of people rarely keeping them is very true and why I do not bother. If we wish to change in any way we can at any time of year.

When Janus the two face god ushers in the new year, we may look back with regret at the past year but it is also a time to look forward with hope in the coming year. For many this is like wiping the slate clean and starting anew. It is the underlying reason for making new year resolutions. Hope springs eternal.

It is assume that a new year's resolution has a one year deadline so many make impossible demands on themselves. Taking baby steps and making sure one has a way of measuring progress will aid us in succeeding with our goals.

Feb. 15 will be the Chinese new year so you still have plenty of time to decide on what resolution to make. Although I'm not sure if this western tradition is also part of your culture.

This really tickled me. It's all nonsense! If we think something needs to change in our live's why wait for some arbitrarily assigned date to promise ourselves we'll do it? Just do it when you realise it needs doing!!!

@josie_ Absolutely. I am also blighted by the curse of perfectionism.

@WorDazza _But there is also a positive side to procrastination. Given time, often the problem resolves by itself.

I don't know the reasons of others but it's the perfectionist in me who procrastinate in order to find the best alternative...and that takes time.

I am not surprised by the data you have given. It does not work for most. I have never made any new year resolutions, ever. I evaluate my life all the time and see that I adapt to circumstances without sacrificing my basic tenets of live and let others live - siva
