For a contrived made up TV pop rock group, the Monkees performed songs by high powered songwriters. “Pleasant Valley Sunday” was written by the prolific and great team of Gerry Coffin and Carole King and named after a street they lived on called Pleasant Valley Way in West Orange, New Jersey. “Another pleasant valley Sunday Charcoal burning everywhere Another pleasant valley Sunday Here in status symbol land Another pleasant valley Sunday” The Monkees get serious as the song is social commentary on status, suburbia and consumerism. Mickey Dolenz sang on the track but a session musician played drums. Producer Chip Douglas played bass so Peter Tork moved to keyboards. “Pleasant Valley Sunday” reached Billboard #3 and on the album “Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn & Jones, Ltd.”
