Birds struggle to get to bird feeders in the snow!

Bird houses in the snow by Pat Z Anthony

The birds had to struggle through the snow to get to the feeders we have for them after the last mess of a snowstorm. We have bird feeders and bird baths on our property, just as most people do these days. It is amusing to see the pretty birds hopping through the snow to get to the feed we put out for them. We do realize the seed gets so cold it is stuck together at times. To remedy this, we simply dump out the old and put in some new. The birds don't need us. They do know how to fly off to where there is sufficient food for them. Spring is on the way! Aren't you so ready for it?

The birds here steal the dog food, the dogs are often chasing them away from the dog feeder.

The birds here would probably be looking to the pet food too if we had some outside @andriaperry

Yes, it's good to think of spring especially when it is below zero F as it is today and it is sunny but windy. If I was a bird I would fly to a warmer place.

@PatZAnthony I don't blame you but tomorrow it will be 34 F and that is nice weather for us.

I'm sure the birds appreciate having a feeder lying around that's changed regularly. I hate the winter as well although we never get any snow (at least where we live). And in the summer, on a heat wave, it's funny and sad at the same time to see the bird's mouths hanging open. remind me to put out bowls of water for them,

@PatZAnthony that's really handy. We have very dry summers, bush-fire friendly. I pity the animals which don't have access to water.

We purchased some automatic watering systems to help last year @Theresaaiza The creek on the back of the property is a big help too.

I sure am even though I wasn't up north for the worst of the recent snows and arctic cold.

@PatZAnthony Yes I agree, in Florida 30 seems cold but at least where we are there is no risk of snow lol

When we were in Florida working recently, the temperature dipped into the 30s! Wow @BelleStarr We did not expect that. But here we also get the snowy fun to deal with-

I was thinking of all of you in the south with that snow, I bet the kids loved it... We are heading to Florida soon and I hope - fingers crossed it will be warm when we get there. I have suet out for the birds all winter, haven't seen many birds on the feeders but the squirrels try hard to get to it. Its been cold and snowy for more than a month...

That's nice that you're providing feed for the birds. We always keep water available for them. They love their baths.

My grandfather used to put out food for the birds. He put the feeder dish right outside the living room window. I think we got more squirrels in the feeder then birds.

It is hard to keep bird feeders going around here..The fat squirrel who lives in the back steals all the seed.

I'm ready for winter to be over, but know that we still have a couple of months before spring will put in a strong showing. We might get a peek here and there along the way. Our birds seem to have flown to warmer climes...we don't have many eating at our feeders this winter,

There are many birds that stay here for the season @Morleyhunt and seem to enjoy the snow more than we humans!

The sooner spring comes the better I will feel to get off wearing heavy clothing to avoid catching a cold.

There is no snow here, thank the powers that be, I don't know how anyone can function in that kinda cold. There aren't a lot of birds around here at the moment, mostly a few mourning doves and sparrows hang around but they're feeding on the insects within the dry weeds out back and I always keep water out there for them and the last few nights it's been frozen over so I put water over the ice in the mornings

Here the birds seem happy with the nuts, berries, seeds, and other goodies they can get from our trees and shrubs, so I don't have any feeders. I am ready for spring, though. It's cold for our part of the country -- colder than usual for this time of year. I know it would considered warm to those of you who have snow on the ground, but we aren't used to frost at night. We long for rain.

The birds are smart, they know how to get the seeds from the feeder even when they are covered with snow. The magpies steal the cat food.

So ready, and I guess it is here early. We have had temps near 70 a few days recently and sun. I am afraid we will pay for this good weather with drought and fires this summer.
