Junk or no Junk?

Are you a hoarder or a minimalist? Is is hard for you to part with your things or is it easy for you to donate those things you no longer need? I tend to be a hoarder and my husband is the opposite, a minimalist. If it were not for him on occasion, forcing me to clean out closets etc, I have to admit, I would be like one of those crazy people on that show "Hoarders" with piles of stuff sitting around. My husband has been good for me. He has opened my eyes about not accumulating so much junk.

I wish you could come here to help me out. I am looking at having to sell my house and all of my furnishings and getting rid of anything and everything that no longer is of use. To say the least it is a huge job but I must do it so I can get back to my homeland the U.S.

That will be a big job. Have you put your house up for sale yet?

I'm a minimalist when it comes to a lot of knick knacks and things on the walls, but a hoarder when it comes to purses and shoes. Oh, and lipstick. The eternal quest for the perfect lipstick.

I'm a hoarder and now that we are planning to move, I am convincing myself to be a minimalist.

@LeaPea2417 It's not easy though and I still haven't decided which ones I'm keeping and which ones I'm giving away. Especially my craft items.

I'm more of a hoarder but recently I've been looking for ways to unload the junk I have in the back room. Some of the stuff is actually in good working order but before I junk it I have to be sure I have no use for it. The older I get the more like mom I become.

I am not a hoarder but I like my things. My kids called me a pack rat but when we finally moved from our house of 28 yrs they were very happy I kept some of the things I did as it brought back many memories for them. We also donated a lot to the second hand stores.

I'm a bit of both I think. I was brought up not to waste anything so I can find it hard to throw things out. If I can find a good home for something then I'm okay with it. But I don't think I really hoard. There is spare room in most of my cupboards.

I defintely tend toward the hoarder side..but right now everything is pretty much contained. I have gotten a rid of a lot. Two of the rooms could use a bit of work though. There is a lot of clothes clutter in the bedroom.

@LeaPea2417 Some I could donate some I am not sure anyone would want honestly. They say you should follow the one year rule with clothes. I could never do that..and I do pluck things to out to wear sometimes I haven't worn for a few years..I have a lot of book clutter and have got rid of some.

@snowy22315 I never do the one year rule because I honestly wear some clothes I have had for many years. They may sit for awhile but then, I will think of them again to wear or wear on a special occasion.

I'm pretty much in the middle. I like a neat and orderly house with no clutter. However, I still have unpacked boxes in my closet from when I moved almost 8 years ago. I always say "one of these days" I'll get to those boxes but I always have better things to do with my time

I'm generally a minimalist, but I seem to have gone a little crazy with the shopping this past Christmas season, and now my house looks like I'm a hoarder because I have so much stuff laying around that I haven't found a place to store yet. But that's just because I haven't done my spring cleaning yet to clear out my closets, but that will be coming up here soon! Probably the two biggest things I would have to say I have that makes me look like a hoarder is shoes, and camping gear. I have way too many pairs of shoes in my closet in my master bedroom, and my outside storage room on my back patio is filled to the ceiling with camping and hiking gear. But other than that, I am definitely a minimalist.

I don't think I'm a hoarder but my house might look like I am. I have a modest antiques/collectibles business, have for many years, so I always have what looks like way too much stuff, even though much of it is for sale.

I am a minimalist and my daughter is a hoarder. She takes after my mom who was a child during the depression.

Thats a great example of how yin/yang or opposites can be so good for each other. I lean more towards the minimalist side.

My husband and I are similar to you both. I tend to "collect" and every so often my husband helps me reduce my collections.

Because I moved a lot, there came the day when I needed to get rid of my accumulation and not take it with. It's very hard for me to downsize.

I am both. What is frustrating, is that even if I wanted to donate some stuff, there is not one person who would haul it for me. I have heard that the Salvation Army will pick up your items, but the closest one to me is almost an hour away. I have alot of cookbooks. I figure they will probably come in handy IF I ever get married. I would love to rid my closet of the same stuff I wear over and over and buy some new items.
