This is an image I have shared before, of hubby, two days after he had a stroke. He went back to work within a week. He was back to driving within a month. Did physical therapy, until released. Had a heart catheterization, and then an ICD pace maker. He looks good now. With my encouragement, he is bowling, to get stronger in his right side again. He says "I am off. I am off in my mind and also in my bowling" Sometimes it is a little hard. He bowls better than I ever have, but nowhere as good as he used to. This week, hubby needed to change a headlight on the Impala. He could not figure out how to get into the area he needed. I found the process for him on You tube. He finally could do it. It is a little hard to have to look things up because you could not figure it out. We also needed new lights on our license tag on the car. Again, we turned to You Tube to figure it out. He got to the lights and wires but could not pull it from the socket. We went to an automotive place a half hour away, and bought the bulbs and the sales person put them in. Hubby said he learned it was not his "know how" but just his strength that is poor. His right hand is still too weak. Some times it is a little hard. We stopped at the lumberyard/improvement center in that town. He looked at some animal traps, as this is also like a sporting goods store, like Cabelas or Bass Pro. He could not work the springs to set the trap. His hand is too weak. It is hard to accept that he cannot do things he used to do with ease. I think he will still get stronger, it has only been a little over a half year. He was pulled over on Wednesday because someone said he was weaving when he drove. He said the policeman accepted that he was just tired. It had been a ten hour work day and he was almost home. That is just hard.

It must be difficult for both of you. I hope that he will get better as more time passes.

On the surface you would not know anything was wrong. It is just that HE knows he is not quite so sharp yet.

Has to be difficult to pick up the pieces and put them together again. Maybe it won´t be like before but he will get stronger and because you are there to help him along as sure as God made little houses he will make it and get strength from the confidence that he will gain. Ten hours is a a very long day for anyone.

@GardenGerty Very long hours for anyone let alone having to drive home also. He will get stronger bit by bit.

The driving part is scary as sometimes stroke victims have their license taken away It is sad to see the struggles they have to face. It can be so frustrating. My dad has had a few mini stroked and major strokes and does pretty well but his thought process is off.

He still has some weakness and distractability. His doctor required him to be off driving for a month before letting him go again. He passed an assessment by occupational therapists. Wednesday is mid week. He has a long day Monday because he bowls in the evening. Last Wednesday his company scheduled him for ten and a half hours, and he drove home in heavy wind. It is no wonder he was weaving. If he was too tired he would pull over and rest and stretch.

Being tired alone can cause weaving. Poor guy I really feel bad for him. He must have been nervous and embarassed being pulled over.

Did the doctor release him to go back to work, or is he just one of those people that can't sit at home even when they should? My hubby is that way, if he were taken out of work it would be no good for him, he'd sit around and drive himself crazy all day!

No, he was released immediately for work, and it was summer and I drove him for a month. I went crazy. The things he does for work were evaluated by PT and OT and they felt that it would actually speed his recovery. I know he would have gone crazy at home though. He was going crazy in the hospital.

@GardenGerty Wow, I'm surprised he was released for work so soon, but I guess if it was helpful.

So someone rang the police on a mobile to complain about your husband? That really surprises me.

I like to think it was out of concern. I am also glad that the police just calmly checked. They could likely see he was tired.

When someone is use to doing everything with ease, it's hard for them to realize, they are no longer able:(

Yes, it is. He thought he would never age at all. I am glad he joined the bowling league as he enjoys the friendships there.

It's amazing that he is able to work a 10 hour day after all he has gone through. I can well understand that things are difficult for both of you. My husband is 87 and in very poor health, and I have to do a lot of things for him. It's hard for him as he's always been so independent.

It sounds like he has made remarkable progress since his stroke and I guess he has his limitations. Hopefully as time goes on he'll get stronger. I imagine it's very hard for you (and him) at times

It is harder for him I think. He honestly believed he was bullet proof and would have no issues at all as he aged. 2017 was challenging.

It's a tough situation to be in, and there are no perfect words to say that will make you feel better. I think what you've done already is great and all you need to do is remind him that you are there for him if he needs to talk. It's something he will always remember about you when he thinks back on this critical period in his life.

Sorry to hear of your hubby's stroke. I have a friend whose hubby also had a stroke and recovered so much that he could drive again. Try to be putting cayenne pepper in his tea. It helps for recovery.

He is doing a lot, I would try not doing as much, but that is just me. I see my mom over doing it and she had a triple by pass some time ago , but she pushes herself to the limit.
