Adventures in the Shower

Today was the first day in two weeks I was able to take a shower. Before I was too busy or too sick. So I was looking forward to this -- sort of. Taking a shower here is a much bigger production that it used to be in Templeton. There I had a really small stall shower and a small handheld shower head. Our water is well water and not metered. The water is normally soft. So there I used to jump into the shower and enjoy it. No catching the water in a bucket as it got hot, and a much smaller wall surface to wipe down when I got out. It's much different in the house I live in now. First, I share the shower with two buckets to catch all the water I can. Second, my shower head, handheld, gave out a few months ago. The hose was leaking. When I mentioned I was looking for a replacement, I asked my handyman to look over the ones I was considering buying online. Then he said his parents had one they were replacing that still worked very well he'd let me have. So we decided to try it. It is much larger and quite a bit heavier. I was going to replace it with one that was more manageable, but just didn't have the opportunity because of the urgent chores and health issues. So I've been tolerating this, hoping to get a better shower head as soon as I have time, since the hose on this one also leaks. So today I got the water hot after half a bucket. I lathered up, and rinsed off. Then I started to wash my hair. As soon as my hair was nice and soapy, the fixture that holds the shower head on the wall crashed to the shower floor. So did the shower head and its hose. I couldn't open my eyes and had to feel around with my hands to find it and then try to rinse my hair and get the shower head attached to the holder near the top of the shower, where most people hang their shower heads. I'm lucky that heavy thing didn't fall on my toe and break it. By then I wasn't enjoying the shower much. I still had to shave my legs and then rinse off again and turn the water off before wiping down the shower walls. It's just good I was no longer feeling weak or dizzy or I don't know what I would have done. But, of course, I wouldn't have tried to take a shower in that condition. Now I have to shop for a new shower head. Meanwhile, I'm reminded to be thankful I at least have hot and cold running water in the house and a walk-in shower. When something goes wrong, I try to find something related I can be thankful for. How did your day go? Are you thankful for anything special today? Have you had any unexpected adventures? Sorry, no photo this time.

Reminds me of the time I took a bath with a cast on my leg and got in but couldn't get out. Fortunately that happened while my husband was still alive and he came and bailed me.

It can be very handy to have a husband around. I try to make sure I tackle the most risky activities when he is home.

Do you stand when taking a shower? If so, I advise you to buy a stool for the shower. I'm very content with ours I bought some time ago. I feel much safer now. I also have a plastic mat to stand on with knobs (if that is the correct word) underneath which doesn't slide.

I actually have a shower stool I hardly ever use except to keep things I need to use in the shower handy. It's also handy for reaching my legs better for shaving and drying myself. I also have a grab bar on the wall that was professionally installed.

I think the shower won this round. then my husband decided to disconnect the showerhead and hose and soak them in vinegar. Now he can't get it back on because of his shoulder injury. So right now there's no shower.

Now that the taxes are done, I'll have time to shop again. I'll feel better when my husband gets home from making copies and mailing the returns with their payments in. His memory isn't as good as it once was, and I'm afraid he may forget to attach the check and voucher to the original return after he copies the forms. The envelope is a bit larger than the return and it would be easy to lose the check and voucher at the bottom if they aren't clipped to the top. He's going direct to the post office after he makes the copies. I don't have a lot of confidence in the clerks at the IRS to check the bottom of the envelopes when it's so easy to say that the check was missing and charge interest for a late payment.

@bagarad I hope when he gets the copies, someone helped him attach the checks in the proper places, so nothing would get missed or misplaced.

That sounds like an awkward shower experience. When we first arrive at our house in New Brunswick we had only a hand held shower that would not stay in the holder to let us use it like a regular shower. Ther is also a window that had no wate repellent curtain....so no shower until we had a chance to shop for a shower curtain and a new shower head. Then I needed to learn to use the shower controls... Eventually we figured it all out and the last few showers I took before heading back to Ontario were much more relaxing.

Yes, there's a lot to consider when buying a shower head -- its size, its weight, whether it has a shut-off valve, and how to use the controls. I remember when we didn't have all these options and a shower was simply a shower.

Hi Barbara? How have you been? I have not seen you in a short time. The shower head in our bathroom is not working fine too so I use the "tabo" or the dipper that we use to get water in a pail. I seldom hear members here who talk about their bathroom adventures. hihi.

I don't usually talk about mine, but then, I don't usually have an adventure when I take a shower. I have't been here as much lately because I've been busy with taxes and somewhat sick.

@bunnybon7 Florida and California are very different, even though they are both warm most of the time. We are an irrigated desert.

WE use the buckets to collect all the water that is otherwise wasted when it's heating up. It takes several minutes for the water to get hot when we turn it on. We don't get much rain here and water is rationed somewhat for watering landscaping from May to October. So we can used the saved water for that or for flushing toilets. Meanwhile, our government sends a lot of water to the ocean that our farmers need in order to save a fish that isn't endangered and hardly anyone really cares about.

This reminded me of when our water gets turned off for them to fix the pipes and there is no warning and I always get caught with shampoo in my hair.

That was quite a chore just to take a shower, but it must have felt good to finally be able to do so. I know there are places that have to ration water and that makes me grateful for the abundance of water we have here and it is a good reminder not to waste it.

Some folks don't have enough water, some have too much, and some have just the right amount to provide all they need without destroying anything. Sounds like you're in that last category.

Scary thought that the whole thing fell to the floor especially since it was so much heavier than the other models. I'm glad you didn't break a toe or anything else either. I don't understand why you have to catch the water in the buckets. Is that how it's determined how much is used or are you making sure you can use the extra for other purposes around the house? I've never heard of that before.

We don't get much rain. We capture the water to use in flushing toilets, and watering plants. It doesn't rain much here and water is very expensive if you use more than the average person does.

Very tired this morning. Didn't want to get up, but had to because of needing to get the signatures and checks added to returns and vouchers that needed to be mailed. I also had to transfer money from an equity loan account before writing the checks, so I couldn't do it yesterday.

Wish there was a photo as that would explain the situation better We had a mishap this morning. Our washing machine outlet gave way and all the water filled the floor. One good thing is that we had not cleaned that floor in a while and I therefore looked at the better side. The maid did a great job.
