There is an art to chopping wood

We watched some men competing in a log-chop event recently. Have you ever watched one? In this class, the men had to chop through a log. It was interesting to watch their preparations. They measured the length of the log and marked the centre with a piece of chalk. Then they measured the diameter and made another mark down the side. They then drew lines to make a V-shape which must have been where they needed to make their cuts. Once they’d done that, they cut a foothold on either side of the piece of the timber. Finally they drove nails partway into the wood and hammered them over. I couldn’t see where they did this but perhaps it was to stop the wood splitting. There were six contestants in the event we watched. The guy nearest the camera started first as the others all had varying handicaps ranging up to about 28 seconds. So whoever was considered the ‘best’ had to start 28 seconds after whoever was considered the ‘worst’. As you can see in the photo, one man has already turned around and started cutting rom the other side. In the end the man third from the left won this heat.

There is most definitely an art to it. As the 10 year old WorDazza found when he tried to chop wood and embedded an axe in his leg!!

My goodness, that's a bit drastic. Maybe you need to make some chalk marks on the WOOD. You're meant to chop WOOD, not legs. It sounds a nasty accident. Did you end up with a scar?

This sounds very bad, I hope it was not too serious.

@JudyEv @LadyDuck Thank you for the concern ladies but I still have both legs in perfectly good working order. I had a fairly deep gash requiring a number of stitches but no permanent damage. It's probably just as well I didn't have the strength at that age to wield the axe with any genuine force!! There is a scar but it's nothing major. You have to know where to look and then look very hard.

They can have it all to themselves although when I was younger I used to like chopping wood but only for a short time.

When I was capable of chopping wood, I couldn't hit the block in the same place twice. I was hopeless. No hand/eye coordination.

@Orson_Kart It's not all bad. I'm not expected to do it now as I'm so bad at it. Don't even have to mention my bad back!

That competition stems from the days of lumberjacks.

@JudyEv Judy, you really share interesting things with us. I just learned something about log chopping. I thought they just chop it. I did not know they have to prepare to do it.

They only prepare the log in this way if they are in a competition.

I love watching those competitions. We have been to one that was at a local fair. They also threw the axes at a bullseye. Very fun to watch.

Threw the axes? That would be a bit scary. Those things are honed to a knife-point.

Yes, I ever watched it as the news from TV. It seems that they chopped the wood like cutting a piece of tofu How amazing it is!

@JudyEv I doubt I may hold the axe for a while but I can't chop the wood like that. It seems they don't have to use any strength

Do they have to stand on the log. Is it not dangerous?

Yes, they have a foot on each end of the log they're chopping.

@allknowing If you look at the photo you can see them standing on the log which is secured by the iron braces. They are chopping through the same log between their feet. I'll add another photo. The three men nearest the camera have all chopped through their logs while the others are still going.

It is judged on time. Fastest one wins which is the reason why the good ones are handicapped and start some seconds after the rest.

@Bullshark I'd like to know a bit more about the way they're handicapped. I guess next time he'll have a few more seconds handicap. The one on the left seemed to have a huge start on the others but he still didn't win. His axe jammed once or twice which would slow him up.

@JudyEv Finishing third despite having a 30 second advantage is pretty good, isn't it? He managed to beat 3 of the 5 contestants who were considered better than him. Solid!

@JudyEv , yes, I too do have the same feeling! Here I have few people coming from tribal area they are experts on cutting the logs. As you say they have a technique and within few minutes they can cut a big log into small pieces! Thanks!

I'm sure the competition originated in the timber industry where tree-fellers would pit themselves against each other.
