I Need A Root Canal

Yes, it's true I need a root canal. I have been having a toothache off and on for the last week or so. I was able to get an appointment with my dentist yesterday and she found that the nerve on the left side of my face is affected. My number 18 tooth, lower left did not react to the cold test. Trust me, the rest of the other teeth down there sure reacted, ouch!! She gave me a referral to two endodontists that she normally uses bu,t of course, they don't take my insurance. So I called Unitedhealthcare and they helped me find some. I will be calling the dentists tomorrow morning to get an appointment as fast as I can. I have a crown on that tooth so they will have to drill through the crown, my crown should survive. I then go back to my dentist and they fix the hole. I am not too happy about all this since I have all the extra nerves in my face and it makes it extra hard to get my gums numb enough to work on.

I have a phobia with having dental work done. I have had 2 root canals and didn't experience any pain beyond a little discomfort. Both root canals failed and the teeth crumbled before a crown could be done. So, any suggestion of a root canal is out of the question for me. I have the tooth removed. But, have to do that while sleeping. Not a good thing for me to be awake with this procedure. I have PTSD and become a crying, moaning, and sometimes grab the dentist's arm while the are working on yanking out said tooth.

I already have a crown on this tooth so that should take care of that issue but I certainly am hoping they don't break the crown.

OH blimey well I do not envy you one bit. Good grief if you visited a dentist why on earth did they not complete the surgery on your tooth. I hope it goes well and you are soon pain free!

She no longer does root canals, it really is easier and better to go to a specialist who does nothing but root canals.

Some dentists here do most everything while others only do basic dental work and you see specialist for different things like dentures, impacted teeth that needed pulling, and now I know root canals are on that list took.

I had a root canal two years ago, it was not as bad as I thought. I am glad they can drill your crown and you do not need to replace it.

Yes me too, it would double the price I am paying if it needs to be replaced.

@BelleStarr Not only it costs a lot to replace, but you need several weeks to adjust to the new crown.

The time I had root canal it didn't really worry me although I remember it being a long appointment. I think I almost went to sleep during it. Maybe they gave me a bit much anaesthetic or something.

I am hoping that will be my case, I have an appointment for tomorrow. The pain level has been increasing and it is getting a little hard to tolerate.

Why can't one dentist do everything?

Because while she does crowns she has decided to send me to a specialist and for this procedure, I think that is a good idea, they do only root canals every day of the week.

But you already have a root canal! Everybody has, even several. I'm afraid it's surgery what you need. :-( I've had several surgeries on my teeth. I think one dislikes them so much because they are so near the brain. I've had more serious and dangerous surgeries on other parts of the body, but they didn't affect me so intimately. I don't know if I'm making myself clear.

I have never had a root canal, here that is what the procedure where they work on the nerve so that the pain goes away is called. I understand that you are saying the canal to my roots was always there. I am lucky that I do not have any infection. I have three crowns but never had to have a root canal when they were placed over my tooth. noun the pulp-filled cavity in the root of a tooth. NORTH AMERICAN a procedure to replace infected pulp in a root canal with an inert material.

@BelleStarr If that's the term, I can't argue, of course. But you have to admit that it is odd. It's not logical. I had such a procedure some years ago. I've survived it as you can see. But it's certainly not a pleasurable experience.

What do you mean you have extra nerves in your face? I've not heard of that before. I've had several root canals through the years and the first one they were done with before I even knew they began. That one want painful, but I don't remember the rest.

Some people, I'm one of them, have extra nerves in their face. Lucky me!!! It means that it takes a lot more to get me pain-free. I had to have 4 doses of novacaine for my crown.

I had a root canal once, and it didn't work or whatever; so had to get the tooth pulled. I don't numb easily. The dentist has to inject me 3 times! And I hate needles, which is why I hardly go. I hope your crown survives, and you can get this done soon.

No I suspect it won't be fun but the pain in the tooth isn't much fin either so I guess it is a trade-off.

We do not know how badly these procedures hurt and I tend to give an impression they hurt more than they do. I feel at the mercy of the dentist during such times. Best of luck - siva
