My Friend's Son Died

I am on Facebook messenger right now talking to one of my best friends. Her second oldest son died last night from an accidental overdose. He was 26 years old. She is in shock and I can't even comprehend what she is going through right now. Her life has been one tragedy after another. She lives in another state and I am trying to help her figure out a way to get back to her home state for the funeral. It is expensive to travel. She might set up a GoFundMe, even though she's not comfortable with the idea of doing that. I will set it up for her if she doesn't want to do it herself. I wish I had the money to just buy her a plane ticket, but I don't. My heart is breaking for her right now. It is not fair that this happened. Her son had his whole life in front of him. His death was a preventable mistake and a tragic waste of life.

I am sorry for your friend. What do you mean for "accidental overdose."?

@Srbageldog The doctors prescribing medications always warn here. They specify that medications must always been taken with ONLY water, even sodas can have side effects, or makes the medicines ineffective.

@LadyDuck Our doctors do not warn of such things. I always wonder about whether or not sodas and other drinks can interfere with medications. Sometimes I will ask the pharmacist. Doctors here prescribe medications sometimes without even considering the other medications you are already taking, so you wind up with meds that don't mix or cause bad interactions.

@redhotpogo I agree. But young people think they're invincible. They don't think this can happen to them.

I am so sorry for your friends loss. It is so sad when this happens and it leaves the remaining family and friends wondering if there was anything they could have done to change the outcome. It is an epidemic around here and has left a lot of people I know in pain. I hope she can get home.

@dodo19 I spoke to her early this morning, and she is doing as well as can be expected. Still in shock and flip-flopping from being comforted by memories and the knowledge that her son is no longer suffering from his addiction or depression, and then being bombarded by the horrible realization that he's gone.

I am very worried about her. I haven't heard from her at all today. I messaged her a while ago to check and see how she's doing, but she hasn't responded. I know she suffers from bipolar depression and severe anxiety, and I fear that this will push her over the edge.

That is devastating for your friend and my heart goes out to her. I feel very sorry for her and it is awful she has had tragedies in her life. I can imagine that this is the biggest one of all of them. Her son was young and he has his whole life in front of him. He should have carried on living at just 26 years old. I wonder why he was taking so many pills or whatever else he did an overdose on.

I can't imagine the pain she must be going through right now. She may be able to get some assistance with travel expenses through a local church charity. They may pay part or all of her travel expenses. So sorry for this loss.

Right now she seems to be in shock. I will keep checking in on her and I told her to call me tomorrow when her boyfriend is at work if it's too much for her to be home alone. Unfortunately she lives on the other side of the country, but I will be there for her the best I can. She's not the type of person who would reach out to a church for charity, but thank you for that suggestion. We're hoping her family will pitch in to help cover travel expenses. I mean she is his mom...she should be there.

Unfortunately she lives on the other side of the country, so I cannot physically be there for her...but I will be there for her the best I can from where I'm at.
