My Love Affair with Herbs

I have lived most of my life in small places. What I like best about these places are the wild greenery that is still around , the kitchen gardens and grounds attached to the houses. Though apartment blocks keep springing up like mushrooms there are still outdoors where plants grow profusely. And that brings me to the herbs both growing wild and in our own yards. I love herbs and that is an understatement. I regularly put in mint, bayleaf, basil, lemon grass in the teas I brew depending upon the weather, all easily available here. The cost of simple herbs tied up in small bundles is exorbitant when sold in the city. And it is not only the cost. There is something so satisfying about plucking and adding freshly plucked herbs to one's cooking. Pepper is a great favourite of mine.Only the fact that I don't have a garden prevents me from growing these lovely green vines. The cluster of green peppers have a distinctive taste before they are dried. In the market I need to be careful while buying peppercorns as dried papaya seeds which look alike are sometimes mixed with them. The other thing which adds a zing is coriander. Though it grows hereonly in winter a long leafed stronger smelling variety does as fine in the summer months. With our palates turning global our kitchens are also stocked with spices like oregano, rosemary, galangal, thyme etc. Thank you to @Garden Gerty whose trip to a herb class got me going to write this post. Any other herb lovers out there? Photo: From the net

Yes, I love herbs and try to grow them inside and on the balcony in the summer. My favorite is stevia. It's so sweet!

@responsiveme I throw a few leaves in my salad or just eat them by themselves. Yes, they do well on the balcony in the summer.

I love herbs and I grow many in my garden. I have several books about herbs, one is very ancient, more than 100 years old. In my garden I grow, rosemary, sage, oregano, thyme, parsley, coriander, mint, dill and tarragon.

We are not a family with cooking with too much herbs but we do have a garden and kitchen garden and lots of fruit trees. We have a 5 acre parcel of land. I love a good kitchen garden.

Dried papaya seeds do look like pepercorns. Isn’t that some kind of cheating?

I plant garlic because garlic could help reducing bugs to my roses and lemon trees. I plant mints lately because I heard that cats love them (alas, slugs and snails love them too ). I love basil and rosemary, their purple flowers & scents are 'sort of' romantic . Oregano (and so is basil) are good for spaghetti sauce I think. Rosemary is good for roasting chicken but I have only used the products from the shops so far. We harvested some onions recently, quite funny really (didn't grow them for eating, only because I felt sorry for the young shoots). That is my relationship to herb so far, would love to be able to grow lemongrass, I like the smell of lemon (but I have never tried).

@responsiveme Rosemary has been really easy for me to grow. Once you have a plant you can keep making more by rooting in water.

First time I got a sprig of fresh rosemary was this weekend at a restaurant with grilled fish. I will now look around to see if I can grow them. I long to retire and go back to the house we have made and have a garden all over again

Herbs are great and you've mentioned some good ones. Especially when you want to change flavors up a bit even with a common dish...herbs help to make that happen.

Well if you use nasturtium leaves in salads that can be a herb from your flower garden

I do have a natural store near me that makes their own herbs and I do buy them from there, not the supermarket. I can only dream of having my own garden. I am so glad you do. The herb that sticks out most in my memory in youth is fresh mint.

Good to have a store nearby where you can get herbs. Mint 8s certainly very refreshing...Especially on a hot day with iced tea
