On Saturdays, local growers meet together to display and hopefully sell what they have recently harvested. There are several markets here worth visiting. All foods offered are from local family farms, with several offering items that have not been sprayed with pesticides, which is very important to us. This is the best time of the year in North Carolina for us. With so many growing all the green goodies and more, we don't have to grow as much as we once did. Is it the right season where you are to enjoy what local farmers and friends are growing?

What a wonderful way to spend some time shopping for the goodies that our Heavenly Father makes available and how we appreciate farmers who actually care about us and the earth.

Some have been busy selling here since last month. Owning greenhouses helps! Think we'll get one of those next. Great for living in when off the grid during the cold season. Some use space in theirs to spend some time in the free heat the sun loves giving.

It is still a bit too early here. Everybody have lettuce and green leaves salad in their garden. For the rest of the vegetables we need to wait another month.

The organic items are so important to us and fortunately, we don't have to grow all of our own food!

I would love some homegrown tomatoes right now. Hubby keeps forgetting to stop at the local farmers market to pick some up. Our local Carlie C's IGA used to carry locally grown produce but for some reason, they stopped. It is a real bummer for me.

@PatZAnthony This is so true. I would love to visit the Farmer's Market in Raleigh this summer but I don't think we will make it. We are once again having vehicle problems.

The fresh items there are so appreciated. We realize more each year how much work they do so we don't have to.

@PatZAnthony I was thinking about getting some fruit trees for our Florida home, maybe lemons or limes, I think they would grow well there.

We go by the farmers market occasionally but they are so expensive. We actually fare better at a grocery store.

Yes currently we have a mango season here. It will be around for one more month. Its summer time here, so not many veggies are possible to cultivate. Green chili, okra, pumpkins, brinjal, tomatoes, Garlic are only highly productive in this time. Other veggies are imported from different states.

Here not everything we would like to have is available, but the local markets are prevented from selling anything not grown here. This helps those in charge keep an eye on what we are being sold. The regular stores can sell anything from anywhere but still must list what is sprayed and what is not @prakashj256

@prakashj256 Here there are many things allowed we don't like, such as people can spray, but then can't say the product is without spray or they will be fined. Also, some foods, like bananas, might be gassed before they enter the country. The gov't here allows that.

@PatZAnthony that's nice. Full control over every shop. We don't have it here. Here anybody can spray anything.Even a hard green banana will turn into soft yellow banana in 36hours but its taste is bit rough. Not naturally sweet. Still it sells. Our public and govt don't put much influence on it.

We have a number of farmers' markets that operate near here, generally once a month. It's great to be able to get food fresh from the farm.

Lucky you, I drive over 30 miles to get to a store that carries some organic veggies, unfortunately deserts aren't conducive to growing a large variety of produce so most of the time what I see is very expensive. I suppose growing in green houses can be costly.

I'm glad you can buy vegetables without pesticide. I go to the supermarket to buy vegetables every day. I don't even know where these vegetables come from. So I don't know if they have any pesticides.

The growers here who are certified have a sign and those who are not certified will still tell us what they use if they are spraying with anything. It's the law, but some are not aware of this.

Our supermarket has a section for locally grown fruits and vegetables aside from their normal stuff. We do have a farm close by that I like during the summer when the berries are plentiful as well as corn and zucchini

I DO like hitting the farmer's markets, as well as a couple of stand alone stores that specialize in locally grown produce that they stock. It's pricier of course. But sometimes the premium is worth it, and I like helping local farmers and the local economy.
