Runaway Train

Someone on mylot inspired this discussion, but I don't remember who it was or the exact topic. Obviously, it was about a song. Anyway, Runaway Train is a song by Soul Asylum, that was made popular back in the nineties. It perfectly encapsulated depression to me. The video was pretty powerful because in the music video they shared pictures of young people who were missing. Just the other day I watched the video on YouTube, and then looked up all the people who were featured: some were runaways that were found. One runaway actually contacted her family after seeing her face on the video two years after she had initially disappeared. Can you imagine sitting with your boyfriend and all of a sudden seeing your face on television? One young man was later found dead, but his killer was also found. It was actually someone close to the family. Others remain missing still today. Have you ever seen something, and it stayed with you so much that you later revisited the subject or situation just to see how it played out?

many times. my youngest son used to play that all the time on his CD player. i really feel bad now cause i did not do enough about his depression. he was 14 yrs then and my mom took him to Ohio from me and i didn't know what to do as she always won out on any conflict. but she did not help matters any. only enabled him more and blamed everything on me. in the end.

Nothing comes to mind but probably that is because it is late and I am tired. But I have to admit I a not particularly curious.

That's actually a good thing. I wish I were less curious.

It is, but his family was left wondering for years. They said they were at least glad to know what happened, finally. That, in itself, is somewhat of a blessing.

That would be strange to see your face in a music video like that. I'm glad some of those runaways were found. I've looked things up when I found something I wanted to know more about.

Oh yeah, I remember when that was on the radio a lot. Funny thing is to me - it sounds hopeful in an odd sort of way. It brings me right back to where I was, and what I was doing. Funny, I wasn't a particular big fan of the song or anything. I didn't dislike it either, it just was. I didn't know that about the video. That is particularly haunting.

I like that is sounded hopeful to you. It's like a poem where people get different meanings from it.

I remember this song. I read an inteview with a German family. Their daughter disappeared and a few weeks before it happened she had told her sister or her friend how much she loved the video. Her family never imagined that she would be in the same situation a few weeks later.

I know the song of which you speak. I've heard it a lot of times, though I can't recall the lyrics now. I have re-watched things plenty of times. There was a video I watched "Everybody should wear sunscreen" or some such. I don't remember if it was before I graduated or after, but it was sometime between my 17th and 20th year that I had first heard it. I will sometimes go back to it because it's a powerful message.

Hi Amber. I know that video but never focused on the the video itself. I was after the lyrics of the song. It was sad to listen because it can be anybody.
