A pastor went to visit a sweet elderly lady who had not come to church in several weeks. He asked her why she had not been there for so long. She told him that she had done something so terrible that she could never step foot into a church again. What do you think she did? I don't know the answer. I want to hear your theory.

Hi Jo Ann. Hmmm... maybe she had killed somebody and she cannot face people because of too much guilt?

That is a good guess. I did not know her so I am not sure what she was capable of. I hope she did not kill anyone.

@akalinus Hopefully but that would be just the worst case scenario. But it is really intriguing.

@mlgen1037 When I hear things like that, I want to know. I love a good mystery and anything is possible with this one.

Maybe took some money from the offering plate as it passed. Best I could come up with for a sweet elderly lady.

That could be. It is hard to make ends meet when you are on Social Security.

@just4him When I was first on SS, it was really scary for a while. I only got a tiny check and I had to work to make ends meet. Now, it is better but emergencies and unexpected expenses still throw me for a loop.

I have tried to come up with something logical but I can't. I think it depends on how "good" of a Christian she is. If she is a long time committed Christian, telling a "little white lie" could be an enormous sin in her eyes. Otherwise, she might have murdered someone... Isn't it weird how people think they have to be righteous to go to church? I thought the church was where you went when you needed help to become righteous.

Yes, I never thought of that angle. Or, maybe she did someone wrong, discouraged someone or something.

@peavey Yes, that is why I put the question here. I am sure someone out there would have the best answer.

It may be terrible or she may just think it's terrible. Did he not ask her what she did?

From the story I heard, he asked but she refused to tell him.

@akalinus If she doesn't tell, we can never know what she did or how bad it really was.

@1hopefulman I don't know if it was really bad or if she just thinks it was really bad. Did she bury a body in the basement or did she talk about someone behind their back?

She is so pious that eating meat during Lent time is considered such a great offence to the church that she does not dare to go to church again.... She killed someone, may be by mistake, poisoning the victim with a cake where she added poison rat instead of baking powder.

@LadyDuck This is making me crazy wondering what this person did. That is why I opened it up for everyone's opinion. There are no wrong answers.

I love the one about rat poison instead of baking powder! You have quite an imagination, Vanny.

Would that keep someone from ever entering a church again? I wonder if she thought so.

@RubyHawk I can't think of anything that is so bad that you can't darken a church door again.

Anything is possible. Everyone has secrets that they would never tell another living person. She had hers but I don't know if they are imaginary slights or big crimes.
