Chasing the blues away.

How do you try to lift your spirits when you are feeling low? I know some attempt to chase those blues away with drinks or food, music, shopping, exercise, cleaning house, baking , watching a funny movie - among other things. I don't feel blue very often, but when I do - a slice of carrot or fruit cake along with a cold glass of homemade ginger beer will surely lift my spirits. If that fails - music is the next tried and proven therapy. What do you do when you are feeling blue?

I know that it will pass and so I may just watch a movie, listen to some music or just get out of the house and go to a park and think bout life.

@db20747 I guess, it might depend on what we think about. What if we think about the beauty of life, the gift of life, the preciousness of life, the blessings of life?

Yes it is the same thing. You won't feel like doing much talking when depressed, but sometimes it is best to talk it out with a close family member or trusted friend.

I listen to music to deal with the blues and if that doesn't work than ice cream

I've actually been having a tough time of it lately. My husband has been working a lot of nights and extra nights lately, the girls are never around and one of our cars is out of commission, hopefully temporarily. I've just been at home most of the time, by myself, not knowing what to do with myself. The lack of sleep hasn't helped. My husband says it's because I'm not doing anything. Possibly true. But what to do? I know I should be working on my novel but have no motivation. I have writing group tomorrow which is usually followed by a couple of us going to the coffee shop after. That usually picks me up (though sometimes brings me down depending on what we talk about). I just don't know what to do to get life going. We're short on money and I want a vacation in the fall so trying to spend as little as possible, but still... I just don't know.

@Kandae11 Because of a chronic illness I have been unable to work for 20+ years. My symptoms have been worse lately, probably because of the lack of sleep. Or the lack of sleep has caused my symptoms to be worse. It's a vicious cycle. My novel is "finished" but after having a friend read it I have some more editing to do.

What do you like to do? Is it possible to find a job in your area ? - nothing beats the blues like activity. I understand what you mean about lacking motivation - you want to see something definite happening now - and the completion of a novel could take a year or more. Have you tried other sites on the internet which could help with your income? Thinking about that vacation in the fall should help to motivate you. I hope something good works out for you.

@patgalca I hope you find a way to ease those symptoms and that your novel becomes a huge success.

when I feel down, I feel down, that's it! Nothing could make me feel good again except for lots of sleep. When I need to work but still feel lethargic, I would have a cup of coffee (I have about 5-6 of them a year LOL).

@YrNemo I must admit that it gives me a kind of vague stomach ache an hour or two after consumption - one reason why I have it infrequently. it does mess with one's digestive system.

@Kandae11 Yes. Very true. At the end of the day I do a small check: —heart beating? Yes. —breathing? Yes. If both of those answers are yes it means I am alive, and so long as I am alive I at least have the CHANCE to break the blues and enjoy my life.

It depends on the reason which turns me to feel blue. Music may be an option, but it has also a risk to deepen the feelings if you don't choose the right music. A walk in the nature, watching a great film or eating chocolate sometimes helps.
