Is your Backyard FOR THE BIRDS?

The thing about residential lawns is if you added up all of the square feet that every single front and back yard of a residential lot would be if you put them together on a larger scale, that land cover would exceed the largest national park or wildlife sanctuary. So it dawned on me to consider making our backyard good for the birds as well as make it good for me to look at. By making your yard safe and attractive at the same time and giving birds a chance to have some cool off zones to get water and chill then this article below link is for you to look at and enjoy.

Lovely birdeens :) My Mama loved the birds. But when she was staying with mean sis she would not let Mama have a bird feeder..how cruel. Yes we must love the birds as well.

If you have flowers and a water source many types will visit you without the feeders

That's a long article and I didn't read all the way to the end of it, but I feel better about my yard now. I let wild sunflowers grow as well as other wild native "weeds" and I have a good variety of birds, although not as many as there was in the country. I did add a water feature so they can drink because it's been hotter than usual this year and I (selfishly) wanted to keep them nearby instead of them having to fly off to the park to drink. I feed the birds and leave water in the front yard so I can see them. This house has those high windows in the back and I'm not tall enough to look out of them. There have been a few feral cats now and then, but there has also been a sparrow hawk that comes by now and then. The birds disappear for a few days when he does.

@lookatdesktop No, they are about the size of a bluejay or maybe slightly larger and kind of pretty. One dive bombed my picture window one time and fell to the ground so I had a good look at him. He was just dazed and got up and flew off after awhile. He has to survive, too.

Oh sure, the nature of survival among birds. I haven't seen a sparrow hawk. Are they very big birds?

Our backyard is mostly dirt . But the birds seem to enjoy digging in it and picking at it (for bugs or whatever it is that they are looking for in the dirt). We do have citrus trees and some tall bushes from the neighbor's yard that hang over - they can play in the shade there. And we do have a bird bath though the birds don't seem to know about it . Hey, but we're working on the attractiveness . . . will get back to you on this in another year or two .

@lookatdesktop Best of luck to both of us on that . . . hope our gardens are "for the birds" .

That is definitely a good plan to have. Looking ahead, I too want to improve the appearance of our backyard. It will take more work on my part and planning to get things done.

The birds are all over here. I did add a bird bath for them as I was afraid they might get in the backyard pond.

Do you have gators in your pond? The backyard pond might eventually take a swim in it. You really can't tell.

@lookatdesktop Not that I have seen. But the in ground pond could have a lot of things in it right now. When I get it fenced for the goats they can check everything out. If one disappears I will know to stay out of there.

I chose that image for my discussion because I like it a lot but our backyard is definitely for the birds and not in a complimentary way.

Not exactly. Our backyard grass is brown like an Arizona desert. I only wish we had that to look at in our yard.

Don't forget the bees as they too need a happy place and we need them. Besides happy bees are far less likely to terrorize the neighborhood.

I see some bees. Since I don't have lots of flowering plants or at least not in the hottest summer time. I have to plant more flowering shrubs and I do like having bees around. They are very essential to the entire global environment.

You have lots of good room for many species to co-exist and not get into each other's way. Very good. The birds love you for it.
