Nearing the End of Physical Therapy?

I had a PT appointment at 7:15 this morning. It went well and I left feeling tired, a bit sore, but good overall. My therapist, a wonderful lady, told me I should be able to hang up my cane most of the time. She recommended I get a foldable cane to keep in the car to use if I get sore or fatigued, or know I'll be on my feet or walking for a long spell. I ordered one as soon as I got home. While I'll be glad to be done with PT I will miss Tina. She's been great. Very patient and always willing to explain exactly how each exercise helps, which muscles it strengthens, and why it's important. I know that you don't tip your physical therapist when insurance is paying the bill and she works for the hospital but I was able to give her an autographed copy of one of my books, The Boy from Buzby Beach, and she was tickled to receive it. That's one of the perks of being an author. An autographed copy of a book always seems to be a welcome gift. Now it's time to get some housework done. My missus has broken the week down into daily chores. Yesterday was trash collection day. Today is toilet cleaning day (yuck). I haven't been much help the last several weeks, but now I can do more and I'm happy to take some of the work off her shoulders. Hope y'all have a great day.

When it became apparent I needed the surgery I made up my mind to do exactly what the doctor and therapy wanted me to in order to speed recovery. The hard part for me was not trying to do too much.

@wolfgirl569 My best day so far was the day I was able to get back behind the wheel of my pickup and drive to the post office. I just went there and back, but knowing I could gave my spirits a huge boost.

@DWDavis It is hard to be down when you are used to being active.

Sounds like you are on the mend. I use a walking stick on my walks around the area I find it very handy for leaning on!

A walking stick is very handy to have on hiking trails. I have one I really like and used before the hip kept me in the campsite, as well as a pair of trekking poles. This fall I hope to be back on the trail and will use one or the other.

@Ronrybs They were a gift from my wife back when my sons were still in Scouts and we used to backpack regularly. I have a nice wooden staff I prefer to use.

@DWDavis I've never been tempted by walking poles, I find sticks are handy for hooking things or pusing spikey things out of the way

PT is great when you have awesome people helping you! Hubby had some PT for his back a few months back - it's done wonders, but he will have to "maintain" for the rest of his life. Good that you can get back to doing the normal stuff again!

@DWDavis It's nice to hear the most people are having a great deal of success with their PTs - unlike long ago when PTs had a reputation for being way too rough and scary. Good to have a notebook with the exercise plan - remember it always!!

I have a small notebook full of pages of exercise diagrams I am supposed to keep doing on my own the days I don't go to PT, and to continue after I'm done with PT. Some of them are redundant and I'm supposed to take the notebook in and my therapist will group them for me.

@DWDavis That is so great! Every time my husband and I go through a trial we feel the same way, it just makes us stronger together. =) What the devil means for bad, God turns it into good-so amazing!

She will. She has been my angel of mercy through all this. She's shown patience and given me so much encouragement. I think our marriage is stronger because of it. A nice thing to think after nearly 30 years.

She was very surprised and delighted when I gave it to her. She had mentioned how she liked to sit on the beach and read when her family goes to the coast. They have a camper down near the beach and go often during the summer. I thought a book set at the beach to read while at the beach would be perfect for her.

I think my last physical therapy session is next Monday, which will just leave me with respiratory therapy. I'm trying to avoid surgery with my PT, not recovery from surgery.

I managed to avoid surgery for three years but the arthritis in my hip was relentless. Not only did it deteriorate to bone on bone the the bones were starting to distort and become misshapen. I will say this, the improvement has been nothing short of wonderful. I hope you are able to continue to delay your surgery as long as you are able to enjoy a good quality of life.

I have a folding cane and it certainly comes in handy at times. Getting an autographed copy of your book is a great gift for your therapist.

I am hoping the folding cane will stay folded most of the time, but I can understand why having one handy is a good idea.

Thank you for the compliment. I haven't stopped teaching completely, but I did leave public for private and middle grades for elementary. I now teach 4th grade at the Catholic School my boys attended. It isn't retirement but it is a world of difference from what I left.

Yes, it's so nice to write a book and present it as a gift to friends or relatives on certain occasions.

I did get quite a bit of writing done. I finished some major revisions on one manuscript and wrote most of another. I hope to have the first one out by Christmas and the other out in time for beach reading next spring.

I will be doing the bathroom cleaning today too. And probably some dishes later. It doesn't look like I am going to pick up the extra hours today.

Bummer about the hours. And thanks for reminding me I need to empty and reload the dishwasher. With just the two of us, we don't have to run it everyday. That's why I often forget when we do.
