Just Say No!

I had to say NO to my husband. I simply had to put my foot down. Life is crazy enough with our son buying his dream home tomorrow. Life is even crazier with us starting all the changes and paperwork to become residents of Florida while keeping our home in Connecticut as our “vacation” home. Well, to make a long story very short, my husband wants to buy a studio apartment or a one bedroom in Manhattan. Why? So we can visit our older son, DIL, and grandchildren more often, see more Broadway shows, shop, go to museums, and eat there more often. We don’t need a third house! I refuse to spend the money on those outrageously overpriced places. We can always sleep at our son’s co-op or at one of two sisters-in-law’s places in the city. We’ve done it before and can do it again. Besides, we are only 75 miles from NYC. I did like two that we saw. But, NO! ~ Photo is of the Ice Princess during archery at camp ~

I know but for me I would love to be near by the theater to see many plays. but you are right there.NYC is so expensive. How often do you need to see them. You see them quite a bit I believe. there you go 75 miles that is not bad a few hours.Good for you Dianne

Usually it's a 1 hour 15 minute drive unless there is traffic, and there is always traffic. We don't see them as much as we'd like, because the kids are always busy with school, sports, birthday parties, homework, sleepovers with friends, etc. We are going in on Thursday to show our son and daughter-in-law the two one bedroom co-ops and have dinner. The kids are still in camp.

@DianneN I know it's a huge step in buying another home but somewhere in my mind having a place in Manhattan sounds wonderful. I lived there for a year when I was 18 and it was the best year of my life. Guess you brought me back to all those fond memories.

When I saw the picture, I thought it was cupid shooting an arrow and make two people fall in love. So, that's what's going on in your life.

Awww, she is my little cupid. She made me fall in love with her the second she was born. I could gobble her up. That's a small part of my crazy life. Don't tell my husband, but it's not going to happen.

Well the cool thing is you are able to afford it . But I know exactly what you're saying - it's not necessary - another thing to pay for and manage. Hubby likes to make all these suggestions that will require a chunk of money, but I am the one who often has to put that foot down. Oh my gosh, this is the Ice Princess? She looks like a teen here . . . oh my gosh she is growing up!!

@DianneN I know on your other post you commented that he put in a bid . . . oh gosh, I'm with you and I hope you do not get it too (you know what I mean, I'm on your side!!). I'm sure the Ice Princess skated so lovely that day - I am proud of her! Ah, does her foot/ankle still bother her? Gosh, 10 - and 5th grade already !

@much2say Thank you! I saw your comment and responded. Luck was with me and no co-op. Everything works out for the best, and right now, that couldn't be more true. She skated her routine without jumps - not allowed to jump, but did another routine with two other girls for the parents which did include jumps. Not smart! However, when her ankle hurts, she wears an elastic sock. She goes for a checkup this week with her orthopedic surgeon.

I'd rather give the money to the kids or pay for graduate school for the grandkids. (College is already paid for by the other grandparents). We have more than enough investments, but my husband wants our lawyer son to look at the two one bedroom places we both like on Thursday. We are going to NYC again, and will take our son and DIL out to dinner afterwards. I still say NO. We do not need it. I do not want another thing to worry about. I do not want to pay for parking. You and I are very much alike in that respect. My word is final, but I will let the kids see the places on Thursday, even though I will still say NO! That's the Ice Princess! Her coach showcased her skating on Parents Visiting Day. You would have been proud of her! She still wears a tight bandage on her ankle at times. She went through her entire routine without jumps, but did a show for the parents with two other girls which included jumps on her better foot. I can't believe she is 10 and going into 5th grade! I taught 5th graders!!!!!

Um, that's a lot of moolah to spend. I can't imagine though my husband did just take out a loan to help my daughter to get a house so I'm not one to speak.

@DianneN We now have a lien on our present house and a loan to pay thanks to dear daughter. Just so long as our old car keeps on putting along, we'll make it through to retirement. You are generous.

We gifted our son with moolah to help lower his mortgage on his new house. His closing is tomorrow. We will also gift him moolah to furnish the house or use for what he wants to change. We do what we can for our kids out of love. I'm sure your daughter appreciates it as much as our son does.

@sallypup I hope you car continues to putt along. Hopefully, you will not incur more expenses. My father helped us buy our first house, and we helped our older son with his first co-op in NYC. It's only fair to help our younger son. He bought his first house all on his own.

Aww, that looks like a lot of fun! I have always wanted to try archery (lots in the area, but I'm not good at aiming). Maybe when the house market goes down, but right now its really expensive & like you said, there are currently other options and only 75 miles away from NYC :) Unless you plan to rent it out for like Air B&B the times you aren't using it..

I couldn't see the target, let alone aim. He put in a bid on a one bedroom. There is now a huge bidding war going on and we should hear soon. I doubt we will get it and I hope we don't. We really don't need it. I would never let a stranger sleep in our bed. Not even in Florida. That grosses me out.

If I had that money to throw I would buy and build an eco-farm that is near my city instead of an overpriced one room apartment, I'm gonna make the farm run on solar energy and start producing our own food.

A Manhattan residence would be spectacularly expensive. Yes, an investment that won't lose value but wouldn't a nice hotel be okay when visiting the city?

It is a small fortune, but I'm just as happy driving home at night and sleeping in my own bed - in Connecticut. Lol! If not, we can stay for the cost of dinner at our son's co-op. Trust me, NYC is off my husband's wish list.

@BelleStarr My hubby grew up in the Bronx in an apartment, so he's happy with anything. lol The HOA does have its benefits and perks when one isn't around to take care of the lawn, trash, upkeep, etc. Our condo in FL was totally renovated while we were away, although we were there for most of the painting. It looks so much better and not as embarrassing for guests to see.

Too late. He put in a bid, but I doubt very much it will be accepted. There is a big bidding war going on as I write this. Actually, a co-op and condo are much easier to care for than a house.

@DianneN When my husband wanted a one bedroom apartment in Italy, I refused. My mother had 3 empty bedrooms and I saw no reason to have a problem with an apartment in Italy. I am glad I convinced him.

@LadyDuck We are still waiting to hear the outcome of the bids. I truly don't want another place. However, if I did want one, I would prefer at least a 2 bedroom for the kids or grandkids. It's not ever going to happen, because of the cost factor for a nice place. Just ridiculous what they cost.

Did you mark that NO down on the calendar? I agree, having three homes is a bit much. Is there anything your Ice Princess isn't involved in sports wise? She's a sports wonder! I'm sure she'll be good at that too. Not criticizing, just amazed at another sport under her belt. I don't know where she finds the time. Now, about that picture. When did she get so tall? I could have sworn she was a bit shorter in her last pictures. She's going to be one heck of a beautiful young woman. She's already a beautiful girl.

I should have marked the NO down, but now it's too late. Hubs made a bid, but I feel in my bones it won't be accepted. There is a huge bidding war going on right now. Thanks so much! She is still tiny. Lol! Due to her broken ankle, her doctor wanted her to take quiet things at camp. She is allowed to skate without jumping, but I've seen her in videos doing some jumps. The stinker! She's always been athletic. I remember her throwing a ball back and forth at her 1st birthday and doing gymnastics as a baby. She's pretty good in anything she sets her mind to providing she enjoys it. Thanks again. I'm going to gobble her up when I see her and her brother!!!!!

@just4him Her brother is very athletic, too. We have no idea where it comes from. Definitely not from their parents! She will see her doctor, the best orthopedic surgeon in NYC, as soon as she returns from camp. I wasn’t too sure about the Olympics before, and still don’t think she has what it takes. Her coach is planning on moving her up another level when she returns. We have to see how her ankle is then. She broke 6 bones, not two. Yikes!

@DianneN I've found athletic kids are into a lot of different sports, so it shouldn't surprise me she's taken up archery. I hope she's being careful. I'd hate to see her risk her Olympic hopefuls with a permanent injury.

You said NO? I say YES, you are right! It doesn't make sense to buy another house, given your situation. And there is no use, it's like going hunting for rabbits and you use a tank for that. No, 75 miles is not that much, but I know the prices there are outrageous. Plus, you have some relatives there, buying a house has little to no benefits for you. So, NO .
