How do you prefer your caffeine ?

I was surprised to hear yesterday that the caffeine found in many energy drinks was a synthetic caffeine. Caffeine was synthetized at the end of the 19th C by a German chemist, Emil Fischer, who got a Nobel prize in 1902. It was not very interesting to synthetize caffeine at this time, as it was more easily obtained from decaffeination of coffee. But when real coffee became a luxury during WWI in Germany, the soldiers were served an ersatz constituted of roasted rye and barley with an addition of synthetic caffeine. Various ersatz of coffee containing synthetic caffeine came back in Germany in the 1930’s when several European countries were applying economic sanctions to Germany to protest against Hitler. Economic sanctions are rarely reaching their goal, and Germany circumvented them by producing various ersatz for products difficult to get. Most of these ersatz were tasting bad and disappeared after the end of WWII. I would have thought that there is today enough caffeine produced by decaffeination for all energy drinks and I found weird to hear that news. I checked the Red Bull site, where I read : «Ingredients such are taurine, caffeine and vitamins are synthetically produced to ensure high and consistent quality». Ouch, it looks like Red Bull believes that people are stupid. It is possible to get pure caffeine, taurine and vitamins not synthetics, the main reason is obvious : synthetizing products costs most of the time a lot less than getting taurine from organic tissues, caffeine from coffee, etc. Knowing that, energy drinks are the actual descendants of the German ersatz/replacement products of the 1930’s. There are little differences between «real» products and synthetic products. For example, it is possible for a chemist to find if the caffeine of a drink comes from coffee or is synthetic (in the EU it has to be specified on the can). And if I ask you if you can make a difference between real vanilla and synthetic vanilla, I am sure that you can. Personally I avoid junk chemicals as much as I can, and my daily caffeine dose was only coming from Arabica coffees grown in mountain areas when I used to drink coffee. How do you prefer your caffeine, natural or synthetic ?

I am addicted to diet cola. There is one called Diet Doctor Thunder and is cherry flavored. I love that stuff and use it for my caffeine wake up call.

I drink coca cola times to times, I have to check if the caffeine in it is synthetic. I never really read the little prints.

If it is called coffee, it is done with real coffee. At least it is the law here.

@marguicha I switched to tea since a few years, because coffee gives me stomach aches. I drank too much coffee when I was younger.

I can make the difference from real and synthetic vanilla, even the smell is different. I avoid anything synthetic. I buy coffee beans that I grind in the morning before brewing my coffee. I never bought Red Bull or anything similar.

My father was doing 100km to buy green coffee beans and was preparing a mix of beans that he was roasting. I have to admit that his coffee was very good, but I do not like coffee at this level, and I always bought my coffee in supermarkets.

@LadyDuck It is also the coffee I buy most of the time, the beans from Colombia have a nice flavor, and the coffee is not very strong.

Funny that the German word 'ersatz' has entered the English language.

Maybe it entered today, I did not checked. It entered in French during WWI.

@MALUSE I use an US-English browser to have the right spell-checker, and it accepted ersatz, so I knew that it had been adopted by English. Reading now the definition given by you, I made a better use of it than I would have thought by doing a comparison between ersatz and Red Bull. Red Bull is an ersatz.

@topffer Oh no! It has been part of the English language for a long time. From the Merriam-Webster dictionary, "Ersatz can be traced back in English to 1875, but it really came into prominence during World War I. Borrowed from German, where Ersatz is a noun meaning "substitute," the word was frequently applied as an adjective in English to items like coffee (from acorns) and flour (from potatoes) - ersatz products resulting from the privations of war. By the time World War II came around, bringing with it a resurgence of the word along with more substitute products, ersatz was wholly entrenched in the language. Today, ersatz can be applied to almost anything that seems like an artificial imitation: "Even when those marketplaces did succeed, the fun always felt a little ersatz." (Malcolm Jones Jr., Newsweek, April 22, 1996)"

Hmm, I never thought about this before. I didn't realize that when coffee it's decaffeinated that they can use the caffeine pulled out in other ways. Interesting. I rarely do energy drinks but I think that here possibly it's not made known whether it's synthetic or actual caffeine. I may have to check that out sometime when I'm bored. My to do list when I'm bored is getting too long. Especially since I should be doing bookkeeping when I'm bored and I put that off too.

It is written "caffeine from synthesis" on the bottles here when it is synthetic. I drink Coca-Cola times to times and the caffeine is natural. You seem to not be bored often if the list is long, that is all good.

@topffer well, I'm not necessarily bored, but I do waste some time playing games online. If I could force myself to stick to a time limit then I might get some of that list tackled sooner. At present I'm not playing many games because I'm here instead, but once I start working both jobs again that will change. Tomorrow I go back to one job and the other one too if it's not raining

Red Bull has the honesty to tell that it is synthetic. I never thought at reading the small prints on beverages like Coca Cola as I was believing that synthetic caffeine was not used today. Now I will check.

I'd very much rather have natural anything to drink! I drink caffeine, but not to drink caffeine - I just happen to enjoy the taste of coffees/teas. Oh but I don't care for energy drinks at all - sugar and chemicals which I guess would include the synthetic caffeine - I didn't realize til your post that there actually was such a thing. On that note, I do not drink decaffeinated drinks either . . . decaf is chemical process apparently - not good for anyone either!

I was also surprised to hear that, I was thinking that synthetic caffeine was not used since WWII, and in fact it is used for several energy drinks and pills of caffeine sold online. A "sugar free" Red Bull is pure junk, it is 100% chemistry, people should be informed of that. I was drinking too much coffee (true coffee), and it started to give me stomach aches, I had to switch to tea, but I still have a coffee times to times.

I only recently discovered that most vanilla is synthetic. Is nothing sacred these days? I take in very little caffeine now. Or do I? Who knows?

For vanilla the main reason is that it cannot be produced in large enough quantities for all the planet. And synthetic vanilla is very cheap to produce. We take caffeine in many drinks without realizing it. I drink coca cola times to times and I forgot when writing this discussion that it had a small dose of caffeine.

@Orson_Kart Lol, not many, there is no more fluorine in water in most of Europe, but they still had bleach here and there. It depends mainly of the quality of the local water, some have no chemicals added.

@topffer 7 I drink mainly only water these days, but I know that many chemicals are used to provide me with this 'natural' product.

I usually don't drink anything with caffeine in it. Caffeine pushes your blood pressure up. Mine is way too high as it is. I don't need it to go shooting through the roof just because I wanted a cup of coffee!

I had a look today at Coca Cola, and it is natural caffeine in it, at least in Europe. If it is synthetic caffeine, they have to tell it on the label. I was never checking the labels, I will read the small prints now. It has confirmed me that a drink like Red Bull was completely junk. People choosing the "Sugarfree" version are drinking a mix of 100% chemicals products. They should pay me for that.

It would hurt my feeling badly if I ever found out that the caffeine I got so far had been fake. They are not likely to do that with instant coffee, right?

I do not see the interest to do that, except to save a few cents. If your instant coffee tastes like coffee, it is probably coffee. It is forbidden here to call "coffee" something with no coffee, the fake ersatz have other names, I suppose it is the same in your place.

I am not really addicted to any brew. I drink because it somehow gets some liquid into me. I believe six to eight glasses of water or fluids need to find their way into my system, so some brew twice in day guarantees some. Rest can be water. In winters it is difficult to remember to drink water, remember? So soups and coffee. I do not really like its taste.
