Will They Fund My Retirement?

There are times when I hear of someone starting a GoFundMe account for some pretty ridiculous things. For example, one woman asked for money to start a spiritual journey in which she would travel around the world and discover new people, places, cultures, and whatever else which would enlighten her own life. People funded her nearly $2,000. Hardly enough to take a world journey, but the fact that people funded her at all boggles the mind. Another person was trying to prove the world was flat, and raised somewhere around $10,000. Yet another person wanted to buy Dave Grohl of Nirvana and Foo Fighters fame. He raised somewhere around $3,000. So, I am thinking, what if I were to start a GoFundMe account and simply say I had set a goal of being retired by age 45, I am 45 now, and I do not have enough money to retire but really want to see my way to retirement. Do you think someone would actually pay me anything toward my goal? Would it be worthy to try it? I wonder if I did it as an experiment and then wrote a blog about it, and even stated that I would do that in the campaign, would anyone pay me? What do you think? Will they fund my retirement? Would you fund it? Would you contribute to a campaign like this?

I have never went to go fund me, is it a page filled with people begging for money? I refuse to donate to anyone I do not know, they would not like me very much because I would tell them get a job and earn it. People should plan for some things, like pay insurance for burial, or save some money. I am sorry but that is how I feel today.

No. I agree with you, and I have never been to the site either. Only read about it. If you want money in this world there are a ton of ways to get it. None of it is easily received. And for many it does not even matter how much you get. How many people win the lottery and wind up broke? Stupid is as stupid does, and it should serve as a reminder than even welfare helps no one who is not able to or willing to help themselves. A handout can be a means to an end or a means to a future depending on how smart the person is you give it to.

I just might. I am often amazed at what people will donate to.

Guess that's no worse than filthy rich people asking for money to live on and that has happened. I'm wary of who I give my money to, so sorry, but you're on your own buddy boy. LOL

@porwest You're already getting a free book, you greedy thing. BTW, someone is working on the new cover so hopefully I'll have the print version out to send you one soon.

@irishidid I am looking forward to it actually. You best be sure to autograph it as well. I keep promoting the interview. Not sure if it is helping, but it is the least I can do over here. BTW, if you address the autograph to Ivan S. Graves, I'd be in your debt.

I think it would be worth trying the experiment just to see what happens. I am sure there are some out there who would donate to you.

Why don't you said that you want to be sponsor to watch the paint dry to see how long it will take and if different colour would take different time to dry? Perhaps you will get a full funding for it.

I am sure there are people out there who would donate to the fund for your retirement, Porwest... I am not one of them. Setting up an account for your retirement is no weirder/stranger than many of the other accounts people set up begging people for their hard-earned cash... I wish you luck with it.

I think that site is just on line begging. They just don't stand on a corner to do it. But best of luck getting your retirement funded!

I don’t see why you wouldn’t try it as an experiment. Go for it! I am sure you will raise some money. lol

The first time I heard about GoFundMe, I thought it was the most selfish idea anyone came up with. From your examples above, it still sounds selfish. I know from my upbringing, my parents would never approve of me doing something like that. There's a song about working hard for your money. That's what those people should do, work for it. I know you work for your money, so opening one for kicks and giggles wouldn't be a good idea.

No, lol I don't think I could help fund your retirement but you never know, there are a lot of people out there that would probably give you some money toward it. You just never know what they will pay for lol

I know, right? I know there have been gofundme's for a variety of things .... prom dresses etc. Now I get that prom dresses are pricey, but there are things like thrift stores, sales, go shop the year before the prom when dresses are on clearance.... but they seem to get money donated. Or, it's not a gofundme - but there's a local couple who have their daughter doing those child pageants. I personally have an issue with those pageants, I think it's a bad idea to instill in little girls that the most important thing is to be pretty.... well, they just got done asking everyone they know for items and money to raise funds to go to Florida for one of the girl's pageants. Now they're back at it for another pageant that the girl has been entered in. While I like the people (they're very nice) - I think it's getting excessive to expect friends to fund it. I much better like the idea of patreon - you can donate in different levels (prices vary depending on the page) and in return you get exclusive content. Posts, drawings, pictures, etc... from who you are donating to. ;-) (It's mostly artistic types, but not exclusively) Hm, gofundme for your retirement.. maybe not (Sorry!) however Jim's paetron account ? Hmmm yeah maybe so! :-)

No harm in trying it. I have seen some crazy things that people ask money for and even with the serious issues I often wonder how much of the money the person needing it gets. Just this week a local news station reported on a homeless man suing a couple who started a Go Fund Me page for him and then they kept a majority of the money. Here is a link:

Honestly, I won't fund that at all or any of those you mentioned. I don't go to sites like that because I don't like begging or asking people for money so I don't like those who asks for money too. Get a job is what I'd probably say.

I cannot believe some of the "causes" people ask money for on go fund me. Its a shame. I doubt anyone will want to fund your retirement, and how will it make you feel? I would rather retire on my own blood sweat tears and interest, just like everybody else does.

Someone else just wanted a new lounge and complained bitterly when virtually no-one contributed towards it. People boggle my mind sometimes. No doubt, if you spin a good enough story, someone would contribute towards your retirement - but it won't be me. Get out there and work for it like the rest of us.
