mother is thinking about making hummus so we bought a can of chickpeas or garbanzos. i do remember what it looked like, but didn’t taste it. she said, “just process the chickpeas or garbanzos then add olive oil.” i’m not sure it’s that simple so i’m checking recipes online. we’re halfway through the arla garlic fresh cheese. (in the past, i bought arla herbs and spices fresh cheese.) i guess she wants hummus as a bread spread for a change. have you tasted hummus? do you make them or buy them? wikipedia says, "hummus or houmous is a dip or spread made from cooked, mashed chickpeas (garbanzos) or other beans, blended with tahini, olive oil, lemon juice, salt and garlic. it is scooped with flatbread, such as pita or an accompaniment to falafel, grilled chicken, fish or eggplant.” ”garnishes include chopped tomato, cucumber, coriander, parsley, caramelized onions, sautéed mushrooms, whole chickpeas, olive oil, hard-boiled eggs, paprika, sumac, ful, olives, pickles and pine nuts. It is sometimes served with tortilla chips or crackers.”chickpeas have appreciable amounts of dietary fiber, protein, B vitamins, manganese and other nutrients.”

I have and its good and even better when its homemade like that. I usually get the store bought stuff and it is exceptional, can only imagine what the homemade stuff tastes like.

@crossbones27 yes, we did try the tostitos creamy spinach dip before. it's kinda pricey since it's imported, but really good.

We love hummus - but we are spoiled and can buy it anywhere. I've also had fresh hummus from friends who make it all the time (a food in their culture) - and of course nothing is better than homemade. My husband likes those fusion ones that can be bought - tomato/basil, garlic herbs, etc. We mostly eat it on pita bread.

@hereandthere Yah, I guess so! And then there are the purists who only like the original type.

yes, some responders mentioned the other flavors/variants. makes me think of a plain baked potato - it's like a canvas.

I soak and boil my own garbanzos when I make hummus. I feel that cans of chick peas don´t taste the same. Tahini is very important (a sesame paste). I usually add more than what recipes say. I have been meaning to use peanut butter instead of tahini as the taste is about the same.

I often make hummus to serve with home made flat bread. I remove the skin from the cooked garbanzo beans (they must be very soft). I puree the garbando, add tahini, crushed garlic very little lemon juice, salt and then I add olive oil little by little, as to prepare a mayo.

@hereandthere you can leave the peel, but the texture is not as smooth as you remove it.

I have never tried it but I hope to one day. I understand it is very popular. The only problem I see here is it is unbelievably expensive in the shops here.

maybe you can make your own, as anna marie guyer does? "we use chick peas (garbanzo beans), lemon juice and a little salt and pepper."

Is that humus on the center? I like eating flatbread at a certain DIY Burger restaurant here. You can choose what to have on your flatbread. Usually, we order the kimchi and chicken barnecue toppings. That humus seems so delicious. Whatis tahini? I think I don't know that. I want to make a humus too as my filling for my sliced bread.

I first tried hummus at the suggestion of our waitress when we visited Biltmore Estate and ate in the restaurant that used to be the stables. Much to my surprise, I enjoyed it. I've never made my own, but I do buy it on occasion.

I have made houmous in the past but I made it from broad beans/faba beans and not from chickpeas/garbanzo beans. The tahini (which is essential) i had to buy because grinding sesame seed really requires a proper mill. While I enjoy the plain (garlic and lemon flavoured) houmous, I also like the kinds which include some chilli and tomato. We normally eat it as a dip with pitta bread (or any kind of flat bread) and raw vegetables such as carrot sticks or celery.

@hereandthere I bought the chilli one in the local store. You can grind sesame seedsto a paste by hand in a mortar but it's hard work! Machines do it a lot quicker and easier.

the one with chili and tomato, was it from a restaurant or store bought? i did wonder how sesame seeds would be grinded since they're so tiny.

@owlwings we use a marble mortar and pestle to pound garlic when sauteing, but yeah sesame seeds are tiny!
