Cleaning Up At the Farmers' Market

Eugene, Oregon
September 21, 2018 10:16am CST
Every Saturday morning, we and a few thousand other local residents go to the Farmers' Market. We like to get the fresh seasonal, locally grown vegetables and fruits and even fish fresh from the Oregon coast. Another benefit is the people watching and about a half-dozen music venues set up around the outdoor market. These little girls have been there every week with a set schedule, singing and playing. Needless to say the vendors and the shoppers are charmed. They are also forthcoming with lots of cash, as you see from the overflowing guitar case. These enterprising young girls are making a bundle and I hope they are setting a lot of it aside for college.

I think the case goes with the uke. Where's the guitar case?

@JamesHxstatic Maybe she (the guitar player) only has a "gig bag," which is no good for collecting money.

@TheHorse I guess it is at that. I will have to see where they put the guitar case tomorrow,

That is amazing, I love supporting performers and they are super smart to do it at a place where you have to have cash on hand so it is easy for people to give something.

I like playing Farmers Markets. Parents often send their cute toddlers (who like to dance) up to the tip jar. You never know where the money will wind up, but everybody laughs.

@JamesHxstatic It pays to play outside the Farmers markets. I remember young boys doing the same in Canada, they even sold the CD of their songs.

It's nice to see young people taking an initiative to make money. I'm really hoping we are now past this whole entitlement thing, where young people want everything handed to them on a silver platter, and back to the reality of working hard to get what you want.

@JamesHxstatic You haven't noticed the entitlement problem? It was really getting bad during the Obama years, but seems to have subsided during the Trump years. Maybe people realize that Trump isn't planning on giving out free handouts.

Sadly, our Farmer's Market doesn't include entertainment, however, it does get plenty of action!

When we were in NZ and went to the farmers' market, we also saw enterprising young boys and girls who keep watch of pet dogs near the entrance of the market. Dogs and other pets are not allowed into the market area so the owners leave their pets with the teens and pay them some amount. I liked the freshlypbaked bread and pastries of the locals and their coffee was good too and yes, like yours, vegetable and fruits were in abundance and mostly organic. They were cheap as well.

There are two or three bakeries with booths there too and fresh coffee. Dogs seem to allowed on leash. There are also booths selling honey and even hard cider and kombucha.

Those young girls are smart to serenade people at the Farmers Market. They certainly look like they're doing well from the money filling their case. I wish we had a local Farmers Market as big as yours. Getting fresh, locally grown fruits and vegetables must be wonderful compared to the stuff we have to buy at the supermarket.

Yes, it is great with so many vendors. It is combined with the Saturday Market (craft vendors of all kinds) across the street and a big food court with local vendors, so there is always a big crowd. They continue rain or shine through the end of October.
Meet the Oregon farmers and food artisans who make the local foods you love.
