The humble paper-clip gets its chance to shine

Many of you know my husband, Vince, is a keen amateur photographer. He belongs to a number of websites that are dedicated to photography of some sort. He is often on the lookout for a particular shot to show, perhaps, nature, perspective, bokah, reflections, portrait, or some other particular aspect. The latest challenge was ‘reflections’. We used the mirrors we broke trying to put our Ikea wardrobes together to set up a mirror box of sorts. I wrote about it here: http://www.mylot.com/post/3171663/our-wardrobe-still-isnt-finished. Yet another example of how junk can be put to good use. We tried taking photos of various objects within the box. My job was to hold a light in EXACTLY the right place, preferably till my arm ached, while Vince fiddled with dials and knobs. The one we liked best in the end involved a handful of colourful paper clips. And guess who it was who suggested using these? Yep, little ol’ moi. Have you heard the saying ‘behind every great man is a great woman’ – or something like that. And the codicil is ‘and a surprised mother-in-law’. But isn't it a great photo?

The ones with a glass vase, candlabra and an ornament weren't nearly as effective although the candlabra was pretty good.

It's pretty! So the clips are on a broken mirror?

We broke the corners on three mirrors trying to construct the mirrored doors on our new wardrobe. We were able to use the mirrors to make this. Hopefully you can see the doors on the left of the photo. Each door is three panels. The perspective makes them look very wide here.

@1hopefulman We thought a school might like the broken mirrors for craft or art work but we haven't found one yet. I guess in the end we'll just have to throw them out.

Thanks. Vince came up with the mirror idea but the paper clips were my contribution. Teamwork works sometimes.

Yes In there is this exchange thing in the world, where a person did an experiment to use a paperclip to do exchange deals and managed to end the event getting a house.

Someone else mentioned that and I have heard about it before. I have enough paper-clips for lots of houses haven't I?

@cintol And yesterday I read about the furore and outrage when a group of women played cricket way back when. Now Australia has lots of women's teams.

It was pretty tricky because unless you got the right angle the camera appeared in the shots.

I think many great people have others who support and allow them to become great. It's like the 'eagles beneath my wings' song. They couldn't have done it on their own.

@judyev I do quite like the imprecision in that photo even though a very precise set of circumstances produced it, especially the aching arm!

He is so fussy sometimes. I had to hold the lamp over the top of this tent affair and the orders went like this: back towards the curtain a bit, no, not that much, come back this way a bit, STOP THERE, now swivel it a little to the right, THE OTHER RIGHT (I battle with left and right sometimes). Tilt it down, that's great. Now hold it there. Oh darn, the battery's flat. I won't be long.' See what I have to put up with?
