Cucumbers have long been thought of as a vegetable but, the scientific definition is that it is a fruit. These are used in salads and pickles. A fruit is that part of the plant that is developed from the flower. It contains the seeds of the plant. The cucumber does this.

Cucumber has a very neutral flavour (neither very sweet or very savoury) and, as it's a close relative of the melons, it can be used in fruit salads or smoothies, for example, to give a 'melon' type flavour when used with other fruits, especially ones fairly low in acid, like strawberries. I have sometimes used a little chopped cucumber in a bowl of strawberries and I have also had a delicious fruit cup made of tea and cider garnished with chopped strawberries and cucumber and a sprig of mint.

@owlwings That's an interesting combination! What do you do with tea and cider to put in with the fruit?

@owlwings I would love to find an already tested recipe online (I am so lazy that way) - as I've never made such a fruit cup (at first I also thought you meant a cup sized fruit salad, or is it?). I wonder what a bit of melon or grape would do to it too. It all sounds quite refreshing !

We've always treated cucumbers like a vegetable, so even though science may say it's a fruit, I can only think of it as a vegetable. I have an Iranian friend who puts cucumbers in her fruit salad . . . it seemed weird at first, but actually it does balance out the sweetness of the other fruits. I expect it with her fruit salads now, but otherwise it would still seem odd to me.

@MALUSE My friend uses the small Persian cucumbers - they are a tad sweeter than those bigger cucumbers (like English ones). I don't know if she added anything else "different" to it - but it was unlike any other fruit salad I've ever had.

I will always consider it a vegetable, no matter what science wants to call it.

As the definition of "vegetables" is a plant or part of a plant, all fruits are also vegetables. Botanically speaking, a fruit is a seed-bearing structure that develops from a flowering plant. Vegetables are all other plant parts (roots, leaves and stem) If you want to be more confused bananas are berries.

@celticeagle we also do that but we only use ordinary vinegar, because apple cider is expensive here.

It makes it hard to check off our so many servings of fruit, so many of veggies, when cucumbers and tomatoes are really fruits.

I don't know. Here we tend to think that cucumber is a kind of vegetable We hardly to eat it raw actually. I think the same argument is also available for tomatos. Some say they are fruits but some think they are vegetables.

I made cucumber juice before. Just juiced them up, add some sugar and ice, and you get a refreshing treats. Anyway everyone know that cucumber is categorized as fruit vegetable, similar to tomato, eggplant, ect. So I was wondering what is the point of this discussion.

I will still treat it as a veggie. But I had wondered about that as tomatoes are also considered a fruit.
