Grumpy Old Men

I was raised by a very funny, silly man. My father could keep a room full of children laughing and giggling. Fast forward 40 years to my dad in his 70 s. He still had his humour. Sometimes. Other times he snapped at people for the slightest irritation! One occasion sticks in my memory when my dad and my even older uncle were shouting at each other over an insignificant comment. They were calling each other old coots and worse. Something I had never seen from either of them before. I turned to my husband, who is pretty good natured, and told him he was never to become a Grumpy Old Man. Can Grumpy Old Man be prevented?

@paigea hahaha, seriously I think being grumpy has got to do or is somewhat connected with certain medical and physical conditions like high blood pressure and male menopause. I try to condition my mind not to be grumpy , to always be what I really am and not turn from a Dr.Jekyll to a mister Hyde

I have always been a happy-go-lucky person, who always sees the humor in things, and have always been very chill and laid back. But as I get older, I find that things start to bother me more. Right now, I keep those frustrations internalized so I still am that happy-go-lucky guy, but I worry that with each passing decade I slowly descend into the hell that is the Grumpy Old Man.

I wish my dad lived long enough to become a grumpy old man. He was 73 when he passed away, and I miss him dearly. He was never grumpy.

Yes he may be prevented. I am already 68 years old and I do behave most of the time. Actually I am reserved type of person. So they better watch out.

It's funny because my dad seems to have always been grumpy, but it seems he is less grumpy these days. But oh yah, the grumpiness is still there . I actually think I am grumpier than my husband .

@paigea But our grumpiness IS justified . . . it's when we see that others don't see it that way that makes us grumpy .

My Dad was a lovely man and he never became "Old", but I am sure he would have never turned into a grumpy old man. My husband has always been a bit grumpy, I do not see the change.

@paigea I think that was the case, my mom had become a grumpy old woman the last couple of years of her life. She had an ulcer in her leg and she had pain, I think that was the problem.

Who knows sometimes grumpiness can take over. Perhaps if at the moment the grumpiness starts something happens to distract them from it then it can be avoided

@paigea Not sure if someone that is nice becomes a bitter old person. I believe if things happen to a person that may turn them into a grumpy person.

@Hannihar maybe his dementia was starting at that time. But when his dementia was quite far along he was a pretty cheerful guy still.

I think being grumpy with old people is due to the physical changes they undergo particularly if there is pain and sickness. A healthy old man may not be grumpy at all.

Oh I think being a grumpy old so-and-so is a priveledge of the elderly to be looked forward to! My friend from college always said that we would become Hell's Grannies when we were old!

@paigea Of course there could be other aspects to it - old age certainly isn't without its problems and things like chronic pain certainly put a damper on good spirits (although plenty of older people won't admit that anything is wrong). Another possibility is dementia - personality changes can be one symptom so may be worth bearing in mind (although of course I don't want to scare you!)

@Fleura my dad did have dementia by the time he reached 80. Probably was starting earlier when this incident happened. He was pretty cheerful as his dementia progressed though.

In the movies or is funny. In real life between my dad and my uncle it was kind of sad at the moment. But kind of funny too.

Oh, that's sad. I think often a person's personality does change a bit as they age. I guess what with more aches and pains, etc, it's harder to be upbeat all the time.
