Soothing bamboo water feature

In Nepal, we took a bus from Kathmandu to Pokhara. As it was going to be a nine-hour journey, we paid for seats in a tourist coach rather than one of the local much smaller buses. We stopped several times. A buffet lunch was included in the price and was at a very upmarket resort. In the garden was this intriguing water feature. We’d seen similar in Thailand. It’s a bit hard to see but in the centre of the photo, between the two big stones is a bamboo pipe. From the upper level, water flows into the pipe which is balanced on a fulcrum. When the water fills the pipe, it tips up and spills the water into the lower level. Bamboo tapping on bamboo makes a lovely mellow sound. We had two more bus trips over the next week. All were tiring but the best thing about this one was that they didn’t play very loud, Indian/Nepali music all the way as they did on the other buses.

i love the ducks and the turtle. what i remember from feng shui is water should be flowing, not stagnant, that's why some houses and now businesses have those small tablet top water fountains. here, people love music and singing so most buses, jeepneys, tricycles and businesses have music playing

I like music too but this was so, so loud and quite foreign to me so not enjoyable. I ended up stuffing my ears with tissues.

@JudyEv actually, i should add dancing. people stop and dance here. i don't like it also when the music is too loud. i don't mind whatever music it is, just make the volume bearable.

@JudyEv Oh that is so beautiful! I often imagine having something like this in my own backyard ( when I eventually get my own place ). So many designs and themes that can be done.

They seem much simpler to set up now than they used to be. They are very soothing - almost mesmerising.

It looks nice, but the 9 hour bus trip sounds tiring.

@JudyEv Even at the comfort of your own car 9 hours are too many. I can't imagine how it must have been with a bus while listening to music all the way. I hope you managed to get some sleep at least.

It was a very tiring trip. The road was very rough and very, very busy with dozens of trucks, buses and motor-bikes but not so many cars.

@besweet I did get some sleep and the scenery was not at all what I was used to so I was quite interested just to see it all.

What a beautiful sight! Were those ducks real?

@JudyEv Yes, the stones definitely look real, although they could be fake too!

@moffittjc I read once how they make 'fake' boulders. They had some at our zoo once. They were very real looking but were really light.

That is so interesting to read. Its really a wonderful idea. The balancing bamboo is like a bird but sending the water to a lower level is a novelty. Wonder how they do it. Music is always nice if it is soft. I like soft music.

I like soft music too but the music in the bus was much too loud to be pleasant.

@gofsey There are literally thousands of shops with many selling duplicates of the same thing. I don't know how they all manage to survive.

@JudyEv And I bet each of them had "Original" printed on them. So long as they are not unstable or deteriorate. I bought a T-shirt and before two washes it began to lose color.

We do find such set ups in few resorts and restaurants. They are really soothing. A loud music in bus makes my headache. Glad they didn't do it.

@arunima25 I know a friend was scared stiff travelling these roads so being distracted makes sense. It didn't really worry me. There is nothing you can do about it and I've had a good life so I don't worry too much.

@JudyEv Sorry to know that. I think they play loud music in buses when they go through curvy mountain trails. I was told by one of bus driver on such trip that it helps them distract from the fear of those curves and also loud music doesn't let them sleep on long drives. It didn't make much sense. I too keep my ears stuffed.

You are correct @JudyEv I used to see water in the Rio Grande all the time but since the early part of this century that was changing and now it is unusual to see very much water in it.

In Thailand the cattle in the rainforest had bamboo cow-bells round their necks and I really loved the sound of them.

How lovely! I love water and water features, obviously. Up north we have a water fountain on our deck with a bamboo wind chime, a waterfall in the woods behind our house, a soothing little brook, and a pond nearby. It’s all so very soothing.

I can only imagine how peaceful it is to sit there and enjoy the sound of the falling water. I miss our pond, but my husband, who had to do all of the maintenance on it, doesn't.

@judyev Fulcrum - a lovely word, all to do with balance and tipping points. Pity it conjures memories of my school physics class, a subject that baffled me with no place for headless bar men. .

It's amazing what you can move if you get something balanced correctly. I didn't do physics at school. I don't think the course covered headless men either.
