the day after the typhoon people flocked to...

Philippines
May 17, 2020 6:16am CST
our dry season (summer) officially started march 20th. but covid-19 and the stay-at-home order since march 15th canceled not just graduation, holy week, out-of-town trips to the beach, going home to the province, reunions, buying halo-halo and other cold treats, but also house repairs. we only felt typhoon ambo for a day here (friday) in our area and it wasn't that strong, then the next day, i noticed several people at the hardware store. i guess the rain and wind of the first typhoon of 2020 reminded them of whatever repairs they had planned to do. but many people had to stop working and earning, so now that the financial aid has already been distributed, they have the money to buy the materials. when do you do house repairs? do you pay people to do them?

For major repairs, we hire people... But for minor ones, my father and brother can do the job. My brother knows how to repair almost everything at home, from appliances, to cabinets... and he also knows how to sew using our old sewing machine. LOL But he lacks time to do these especially now... So, we have to hire...

one of my brothers is like your brother, but he lives away from us and has a full time job. i don't know if he can sew, hand or machine, but i won't be surprised if he can learn it immediately if he has to. your brother is an engineer, right?

@hereandthere yes he is.. an electrical engineer. Yup, my brother also has a full time job and sometimes he is sent to different locations... Now, he is being sent again to a province in region 2... He stays there several days a week, then comes back on Friday evening. He still goes to work on Saturday. So tiring!

We are mostly able to do our own house repairs and only get help in if the job is too big or complicated for us. Thankfully we've never had any damage from storms.

here, people are reliant on plumbers, carpenters and electricians. but it's also a way of keeping people employed, even if it's just odd jobs now and then.

@hereandthere I agree but here, such tradesmen seem to be in big demand and often don't even get back to you if you leave messages.

Can't believe that people went outside with the partial lifting of the lock down. They are not aware that there is still a virus going around. When do you do house repairs? When needed. Do you pay people to do them? Sometimes.

I live in the ancestral house of more than a decade old therefore regular repairs have to be done. These days carpenters have become expensive and rare to find a good one. The one I regularly hire had already landed a job as JoB order in our LGU.

Inwas a bit reluctant to really go out of my place. I guess that being locked up in house has made me a bit afraid of going out anymore. I will have to realize that tomorrow when it will be my first time to go out to work. So many things are running in my mind right now what to do at work and remembering everything I am to do back before Covid came to us.

@hereandthere I had our company car fetched us back and forth. I was the only person to report back and my boss told me to get the things in the office since our president is still. ot allowing anyone to go back to work. So I came there to get my PC and other papers to continue working at home. I felt excited to see the outside world again. But it was a different feeling seeing less people moving about and streets blocked from every corner and the checkpoints every now and then. After the whole days work my body felt strangely tired after a few short hours outside.

my brother, who got stuck here because of covid19 pandemic ( supposed to be, he should be back in UK on February but he is still here), often wishes for strong winds and rain. "hope it will be suoer windy or typhoon comes" is all he hopes for. Ambo, we thought, will pass by us here since it was announced signal #2. none... the sun shone on that day. then Ambo left the next day, to Batanes.

@hereandthere no, Ambo did not even had its presence felt. just 30 minutes of rain with moderate winds and then it was gone.

There is a company that checks my house once a year and shows me any repairs that need to be done. I'm not sure I want anyone coming inside my house this year though, so I may tell them to wait!

When it comes to big repairs, we pay for the one doing it. I am planning to paint the frames of our doors here. We do it as it is not much of work for me and my husband.

Wind can do quite a bit of damage. I've had part of my fence blown down from high winds. I have since had to replace the entire fence a job I had to hire someone to do. Small repairs I do myself but larger ones I need to hire since I don't have the ability to do those repairs on my own.

There is a whole list of minor (and some major) repairs that need to be done here. My husband can probably get to most of them, but he doesn't have time - so they sit. There are some things in which we really should hire someone but that's not going to happen right now (even before the pandemic, hiring someone to do such repairs would be costly).

Our property has some minor issues which need to be fixed/repaired, but due to this Covid-19, we are a bit reluctant to call any stranger to the house.

We are lucky. Any repairs that need to be done our landlord arranges and pays for. In 4 years almost that we have been here he hasnt had to arrange one single repair.
